Area Sports Briefs: Middle school tournament resumes with girls semifinals

The varsity middle school basketball tournament resumes today at Southeast with the girls semifinals.
Erwin’s top-seeded girls (14-1) take on fourth-seeded North Rowan (9-6) at 4:30 p.m. China Grove’s second-seeded girls (13-2) face third-seeded Knox (12-3) at 6 p.m.
Boys semifinals are Wednesday with top-seeded Mooresville (14-1) battling No. 4 China Grove (9-6) at 4:30 p.m. and No. 2 North Rowan (13-2) squaring off with No. 3 Erwin (10-5) at 6 p.m.
Championship games are Thursday, girls at 4:30 and boys at 6 p.m.

Erwin’s girls rolled 50-10 in the first round against Corriher-Lipe. Haley Dalton scored 15 points, while Mary Spry and Hannah Isley scored 10 each. Leah Hinceman had five.
Mackenzie Chabala scored six to lead the Yellow Jackets.

Cameron Stout scored 24 points for Knox in a 54-48 loss to China Grove in the first round.
College wrestling
UNC Pembroke won against Limestone, 22-11, on Monday.
Brandon Sloop (Carson) won a decision at 174 pounds for the Braves.
College basketball
Pfeiffer’s men routed Carolina Christian, 124-66, on Saturday to stay undefeated.
Pfeiffer (11-0) was led by Josh Calhoun, who poured in 29 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Jevon Patton shot 9-for-10 for 24 points, and Marcus Sawyers shot 12-for-15 and scored 25.
Calhoun is on the Watch List for the 2018 Bevo Francis Award which consists of 100 small college men’s basketball players in several divisions.

Tre Williams (Carson) scored 14 points and had three steals in Claflin’s 86-53 romp against Paine on Saturday.

Amani Ajayi (East Rowan) had 12 points and six rebounds for Averett’s women in a 77-66 loss on Saturday at Pfeiffer.
Ajayi also had 12 points and six rebounds on Sunday in a 79-72 loss to Ferrum.
