Meet Lee Street theatre’s new technical director
Lee Street theatre introduces Rod Oden as the new technical director to carry out the rest of Season 10 and build future seasons. Oden joins the company after former technical director Chris Speer stepped down in December after five years of service.
Oden most recently worked as production manager and technical director of the Jefferson Performing Arts Society in New Orleans, La. He has designed for theaters from Los Angeles to New Orleans and previously worked as technical director of the Actors Guild of Parkersburg in Parkersburg, W.Va. He enjoys working alongside community members, volunteers and students to help grow and create professional experiences in the theatre.

Scottish Music Fuels Fundraiser for Fort Dobbs
STATESVILLE — Recalling the Scots-Irish settlers in the region, a special fundraising concert featuring the the foot-stomping 18th century Scottish tunes of fiddle/cello duo of Tim MacDonald and Jeremy Ward is being presented by the Friends of Fort Dobbs State Historic Site. The Feb. 7, 6:30 p.m. concert at Southern Distilling, north of Statesville, celebrates the release of the duo’s new album, “The Wilds,” and also raises funds for Fort Dobbs. Revelers will be able to sample several of the award-winning bourbons produced at the Southern Distilling distillery.

‘Delivery Upon the Delaware’

1776: During that bitterly cold winter more than 242 years ago, the fledgling Continental Army under the command of General George Washington had been smashed and defeated. British forces had been reinforced by German mercenaries, swelling its ranks to 20,000 troops compared to the Americans’ scattered troops of 5,000.
With harsh winter weather setting in, the American Army was able to escape destruction by placing the formidable Delaware River between themselves and the British forces. Washington formulated a bold plan that would save the Army and the American War of Independence.
To learn the details of Washington’s plan and more, the Stanly County Genealogical Society and the Stanly County Historical Society will host Steven A. Campbell, speaker and historian who has has researched and written a series of history lectures spanning the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. In all his presentations Campbell emphasizes the human element and its impact on history.

‘Backcountry Mosaic: the Pattern of the Peopling of the Early Piedmont, 1754-1763’

Backcountry North Carolina was a hilly, tree-filled landscape, divided by the forks of the Yadkin and Catawba Rivers and their tributaries. The Cherokee, Catawba, and other American Indian tribes kept their homes there and moved with the growth and decline of the animal population. White settlers descended on the backcountry from the north and east, looking for opportunity, religious freedom, and wealth. Some brought enslaved African men and women along to help build their towns, farms, and businesses. In the conflicted time between 1750 and 1790, this diverse group of people did their best to survive. Join us for a program by Catawba College Professor and Historian Dr. Gary Freeze and learn more about this “Backcountry Mosaic: the Pattern of the Peopling of the Early Piedmont, 1754-1763.” This program is free and open to the public.
Dr. Gary R. Freeze is the William R. Weaver Professor of Humanities at Catawba College, where he teaches history, geography, and politics. The Statesville native has spent the better part of his life exploring our region’s history and is cited worldwide for his scholarship on the industrialization of the North Carolina Piedmont. For folks down in Iredell, he is still remembered for his work as Homer Keever’s assistant in the editing of Iredell: Piedmont County during the 1976 bicentennial celebration.
GREENSBORO — Opening reception Wednesday, Jan. 24 from 6-8 p.m.
Greensboro College presents “Vision and Intuition,” an exhibition of paintings by the husband-and-wife team of Charlotte and Erik Ström, through Feb. 23, in the Anne Rudd Galyon and Irene Cullis Galleries in Cowan Humanities Building on campus.
Regular exhibition hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays. The exhibition is free, and the public is invited.
The Ströms incorporate elements of abstraction and design into representational environments in order to further enhance the emotional and psychological impact of the subject matter. Some of their paintings were painted by one or the other, while some are collaborations.
