The Salisbury-Rowan PFLAG organization held their annual Autumn Soiree, a scholarship fundraiser, on Nov. 8, 2008, at the Looking Glass Artist Collective.
Special guests were Elke Kennedy and her husband Jim from Greenville, S.C. She spoke about the tragic beating and death of their son, Sean Kennedy, which led to the establishment of the foundation Sean’s Last Wish.
Entertainment for the soiree was provided by the band Craven Moorehead and the comic Little Tuna.
There were 175 guests in attendance, raising enough for PFLAG to award three $1,000 scholarships next year.
Presenting sponsor for the event was Food Lion. Numerous artists and businesses donated auction items and doorprizes.
China Grove reunion
The China Grove High School lass of 1947 celebrated their 61st reunion Saturday, Nov. 1 at Gary’s Bar-B-Que in China Grove with 26 persons attending.
The meeting began at 11:30 a.m. with a social hour and refreshments, followed by lunch at noon. A table was available for class memorabilia to be displayed and shared.
The program began with a welcome by Jim Davis, master of ceremonies, to the 12 class members present from a class of 63 persons, along with 14 guests, including wives, husbands, daughter and a grandson.
The invocation was given by Earl Sides. Committee members were: Mary Correll Barnhardt, Jim Davis, Frankie Overcash Echerd, Ted Rector, Earl Sides. They will plan the 2009 reunion, along with others who are welcome.
Sides, class historian, led a roll call and a memorial service in loving memory for the 28 deceased classmates, which includes one additional person since last year.

During a business session the class agreed to have another class reunion next year. The current committee was asked to plan the reunion for 2009.
The school colors were red and white. Since this is an election year, they added blue, going patriotic. Also since this is the year of the Olympics, they wanted to recognize all the class members as “winners” for being “survivors” and spouses for being “supporters.” The class sang the “China Grove School Spirit Song” as a closing.

Rockwell reunion
The Rockwell High School class of 1945 celebrated their 63rd class reunion on Sept. 13 at Thyatira Presbyterian Church.
Eighteen classmates and 15 guests attended the luncheon and enjoyed the historic tour of the church grounds and museum.
A memorial was given by Jake Setzer for the 18 deceased classmates.
After the business meeting, class pictures were taken and door prizes were awarded.
The 2009 reunion will be held in September at Thyatira.

Brown recital
Piano students of Tina Brown of Rockwell presented a recital Nov. 15 in the fellowship hall of Organ Lutheran Church.
The theme for the fall recital was “Dance.”
Students played a variety of different dance styles entitled, “Tarantula’s Twist,” “Butterfly Waltz,” “Crystal Ballerina,” “Dance of the Matador,” “Chinese Lion Dance,” “Gypsy Dance,” “Square Dance,” and “Boogie Train.”

Tisha Cooke arranged centerpieces of candles and stars. Donna Peeler donated chocolate red candy roses to classmates and guests in honor of Arnold Peeler and Mary Fisher.

The Granite Quarry High School class of 1948 held its 60th reunion on Nov. 1 in the fellowship hall of Shiloh Reformed Church in Faith.
Those arriving at 10 a.m. signed their nametags and joined others for social time and catching up of family news.
Class colors of red and white were used throughout the dining area. Red plates and white tablecloths were accented by red candles inside hurricane globes surrounded by confetti and red roses.
Sharon Deal provided the decorations and catered the meal.
Doris Peacock Cline baked a special cake.
John “Buddy” Foster welcomed the 20 classmates and 14 guests.
Elberta Privette gave the memorial for deceased classmates. Hilda Barber Beck gave the devotions and prayer.
“Can You Top This?” was a time of remembering and telling some of the crazy and funny things done by classmates. There was some side-splitting laughter by all.
Rose McCombs Holshouser read “We are Survivors.”
Classmates and guests received token gifts as they departed. Phillip Brown made group pictures and gave one to each classmate.
