Rowan Helping Ministries is hosting a reception today, 4-6 p.m., for artist Michael Kirksey at the Rail Walk Studios and Gallery, 409 N. Lee St.
Kirksey is the creator of this year’s Rowan Helping Ministries honor card, “The Gift.”

Uwharrie auditions
ALBEMARLE ó Auditions for their annual holiday radio show, “The Christmas Bus” by Robert Inman will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Albemarle, 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23.
Characters are male and female, from 8-70s.

Concert Choir
The Concert Choir of Salisbury presents “A Study in Musical Styles” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21 at St. John’s Lutheran Church
Music director Dean Orbison will conduct the concert, which will be entirely a capella.
The performance includes sacred works of Lotti and Hassler, “Lux Aurumque” by Eric Whitacre, arrangements of “I Wonder as I Wander” and “I Hear a Voice A-Prayin,'”Evan Copley’s “Surely He Hath Borne Our Griefs,” “Set Me as a Seal” by René Clausen, Salmo 150 by Aquiar. The men of Concert Choir will be featured in a performance of Franz Schubert’s “Holy, Holy, Holy.”

Ceremony of Carols
MISENHEIMER ó The Pfeiffer University Symphonic Choir will present British composer Benjamin Britten’s classic “A Ceremony of Carols” at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in the Henry Pfeiffer Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.
“A Ceremony of Carols” has been a well-loved Christmas piece for more than half a century. Britten composed the work in 1942 on a sea voyage from America to his home country of England. The work reflects the revival of English tradition in sacred music during the outbreak of World War II.
Steve Harrill, assistant professor of music at Pfeiffer, directs the symphonic choir, and Dr. Phillip Burgess, choirmaster at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Salisbury will accompany the choir at the organ. A number of Pfeiffer music students will perform solos.
Pfeiffer vocal students joined by community singers make up the symphonic choir.
Christmas art show
The first annual Rail Walk Art and Fine Crafts Christmas Show will be held 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Dec. 5 and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Dec. 6 in the 400 block of North Lee Street.
Special Christmas pricing and refreshments will be available at Cascade Sculpture and Rail Walk Studios and Gallery. Original art, pottery, sculpture, glass ornaments, handmade jewelry and Christmas cards will be among the items available for sale.
Members of the Looking Glass Artist Collective will be offering art and fine crafts for sale at booths in their theater and classroom and there will be live performances throughout the festival days.
Additional vendor space is available. Interested persons who become a member of the collective by Nov. 26 are invited to participate.

Gingerbread contest
As part of the Spencer Hometown Holidays celebration, the public is invited to enter the second annual Gingerbread House Decorating Contest. Entries will be accepted for teams or individuals. Categories include families with children up to age 12; teens 13-17; and adults, 18 and up.
The entire house must be edible and must be affixed to a base no longer than 12 inches by 8 inches or an 18-inch circle. Houses must be free-standing with no use of running water or electricity requirements.
Entries with forms will be accepted from 5-7 p.m. at Santa’s Headquarters, 506 S. Salisbury Av, on Friday, Dec. 5
Winners will be announced on Saturday, Dec. 6. Judges will award points for presentation, quality of construction, detail and design and originality. A People’s Choice winner will be awarded to the structure that gets the most votes from the public.
All entries will be on display until Dec. 20. Any houses not picked up by 7 p.m. that day will be disposed of.

Brent Smith opening
The Green Goat Gallery is hosting an opening reception featuring new pottery by Brent Smith from 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22. The public is invited.
Born in Burlington, Smith moved with his family to Salisbury when he was a boy.
After graduating from West Rowan High School, he attended East Carolina University where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics.
He has been a full-time exhibiting potter since.
Crafting both functional and traditional work, Smith’s pottery has been featured at The Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, Waterworks Visual Arts Center, Pfeiffer University, and at Artfest in Matthews, where he was awarded two commendations of merit.
A co-founder of the Green Goat Gallery, Brent Smith now operates Brent Smith Pottery out of his home in Salisbury.
The exhibit features both wood-fired and electric kiln-fired work.
