ELIZABETH CITY — Livingstone’s men’s basketball team got it done on the defensive end on Monday, holding Elizabeth City State to 20 points in the second half.

The Blue Bears  won 75-62. They led 45-42 at the break.

Lydell Elmore scored 19 points, Roger Ray had 13 points and nine assists, and Ramel Belfield scored 12 for the Blue Bears (7-9, 5-5 CIAA).

Livingstone didn’t have a great night from the 3-point line or free-throw line but the Blue Bears shot 50.8 percent from the floor.

Livingstone dominated the glass in the second half, grabbing twice as many boards as the Vikings (7-9, 3-6).

LC women fall

ELIZABETH CITY —  Struggles continued for  Livingstone’s women’s baketball team on Monday.

The Blue Bears lost at Elizabeth City State, 84-57, the 11th straight setback  for LC.

Kyala Searcy scored 14 for Livingstone, while Jade Porter had 10.

Livingstone couldn’t overcome 30 turnovers and 32.2 percent shooting.

Jalyn Brown scored 24 for the Vikings, who shot 43.3 percent. The Vikings led 50-23 at halfime and were up by as many as 38.

Rogers honored

Catawba forward Terri Rogers was named the South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Jan. 22-28.

  Rogers  netted 20 points with five rebounds and three steals in the Indians’ 63-60 win over Queens, and then poured in 22 points with 15 rebounds in the 71-66 win over Tusculum on the road.

Rogers averaged a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting 48.6 percent from the field and 80 percent from the charity stripe.

Morrison honored

The North Carolina Department of American Legion Baseball   named  Radolph County Post 45’s Cameron Morrison the 2017 Area III Player of the Year.

The award is scheduled to be presented at the annual American Legion Hall of Fame ceremony in Kinston on March 24.

A graduate of North Moore High, Morrison played Legion ball in Asheboro for four summers and was a leader of the 2017 state champs.

The Post 45 team won the regional and participated in the American Legion World Series, winning  its first two games before being eliminated in the semifinals.

Morrison led the squad with a .390 batting average, 64 runs scored and 47 RBIs.

Morrison caught 300 innings, made only one error and picked of 12 runners,

He played in 162 games in his stellar career for Post 45.

Morrison is expected to be the starting catcher for Catawba College this season.

Also nominated for Area III Player of the Year was  Rowan County’s Chandler Blackwelder, now a freshman at UNC Pembroke.

Middle schools

In jayvee boys basketball, Jayden “Juke” Harris scored 28 points in Knox’s 55-44 loss to West Rowan. Tyreze Miller scored nine for the Trojans.

Erwin’s girls won against Southeast, 24-23.

Icesis Nwafor and Lindsey Cook scored seven each for Erwin. Laney Reilly scored 13 for Southeast, and Dondrea Carmichael had six.

Local golf

Gracie Hudson made a hole-in-one at McCanless on Saturday. She aced the No. 3 hole with a 9-iron.

Hudson was playing with Keyan Clanton.

Hudson is a member of the East Rowan team.

First Pitch Dinner

Catawba’s First Pitcher Dinner on Saturday was a sellout and a resounding success. The committee raised $49,200 for the Catawba baseball team.

CPC basketball

Davie County’s boys (14-5, 5-1) got another Central Piedmont Conference win on Monday, beating West Forsyth, 64-57.

Michael Walton scored 16, Jacob Hendrix had 14 points, Cooper Wall had 11 points and five assists, and Owen McCormack had 12 points and four blocks.

Davie, R.J. Reynolds and East Forsyth all have one league loss.

CCC basketball

The biggest game tonight is at Salisbury where the Hornet girls and Ledford will be battling for first place. Both teams have one league loss. Salisbury won at Ledford.

NPC basketball

Both West Rowan teams are tied for first place heading into tonight’s games at South Iredell.

Carson’s teams are home against East Rowan. Carson’s boys are tied for first place.

SPC basketball

Cox Mill’s boys, ranked No. 1 in 3A, play at A.L. Brown. The Wonders nearly stunned the Chargers on the road, leading late before losing 62-60.

Indoor track

State championships are set for Feb. 9 (1A/2A) and Feb. 10 (3A, 4A).

Swimming

South Rowan and Salisbury will compete Feb. 3 in the Midwest Regional at Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.

Wrestling

North Piedmont Conference runner-up West Rowan (16-3) wrestles at Crest (28-10) tonight in the first round of the 3A dual team state playoffs.

Also wrestling at Crest are North Henderson (21-0) and Alexander Central (17-8). The West-Crest winner wrestles the North Henderson-Alexander Central winner tonight.

NPC champ North Iredell (24-5) is hosting Kings Mountain (35-6), St. Stephens (37-4) and Enka (19-5).

North Rowan made the 1A dual team wrestling playoffs as a wild card.

The Cavaliers (7-11) take on Yadkin Valley Conference runner-up South Stanly (20-6) tonight at Chatham Central. The North Rowan-South Stanly winner takes on YVC champ Chatham Central (10-10) in tonight’s second round.

Central Carolina Conference runner-up East Davidson (16-3) is wrestling at home in the 2A playoffs vs. Wheatmore (21-4). CCC champ Ledford (24-12) is wrestling against Roanoke Rapids (6-1) in the first round at Trinity.

Davie (34-3) takes on Myers Park (9-8) in the first round. The other first-round match at Davie is Hough (17-4) vs. Ardrey Kell  (17-19).
