For working adults, it can be hard to find the time to attend English classes. The Rowan County Literacy Council is hoping a new program at the J. Fred Corriher Jr. YMCA in South Rowan will make it a little easier.

The Literacy Council will offer a free evening English as Second Language (ESL) class starting on Feb. 12 and running for 10 weeks. The class will meet twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-7:30 p.m.

“Working adults have many demands on their time, and need a program that is intensive, convenient and relevant. Our program will pack a lot into 10 weeks and participants can expect to come away with a better grasp of conversational English which can help them in their professional and private lives,” said Rowan County Literacy Council Program Coordinator Laurel Harry.

The class will be led by Crystal Chemel, a veteran ESL instructor who has experience working with multi-level classrooms. The class is limited to 20 students and registration is required. Materials will be provided and attendance is mandatory since space is limited. To sign up, call 704-216-8266.

The class will take place at the J.Fred Corriher Jr. YMCA at 950 Kimball Road in China Grove. “We greatly appreciate the willingness of the South Rowan YMCA to partner with us to offer this service to the community,” said Harry.

The Rowan County Literacy Council has been serving Rowan County since 1976 and is headquartered in the main branch of the Rowan Public Library at 201 W. Fisher St. RCLC is a United Way Agency whose student programs are free of charge to individuals in the community.
