CHAPEL HILL ó Chay Shegog is starting to get comfortable in her new surroundings. That could lead to plenty of uncomfortable nights in the future for North Carolina’s opponents.
Shegog scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the second-ranked Tar Heels to a 96-42 rout of Wofford on Tuesday.
Shegog, a 6-5 freshman, tallied the first double-double of her college career. She tied a career high in scoring that she established in North Carolina’s 80-79 win at Oklahoma on Sunday in the Women’s Preseason NIT final, and she reached double figures in rebounds for the first time.
“At the beginning, being a freshman, I was really nervous the first couple of games,” said Shegog, who shot 5-for-8 from the field. “But as I kept playing with the team and adjusted to everything, I’m used to it now. When I go on, I’m not as nervous anymore.”
Cetera DeGraffenreid scored 15 points and came up with five of North Carolina’s 23 steals.
Iman McFarland and Laura Broomfield added 12 points apiece for the Tar Heels (6-0), who scored the game’s first 14 points and limited Wofford to 20-percent shooting.
Natalie Gramblin led the Terriers (0-2), who trailed 50-14 at halftime, with 10 points. Mahagony Williams, the reigning Southern Conference freshman of the year, fouled out with no points.
Despite the big early lead, North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell wasn’t pleased with her team’s play. Wofford turned over the ball on each of its first three possessions, but Hatchell subbed out her starting five 1:33 into the game after the Tar Heels failed to score points off any of those miscues.
“I didn’t think we started off with the intensity we needed,” Hatchell said. “This team has got a lot of potential. We really played hard and gave it all we had at Oklahoma, and it paid off for us. But we’ve got to do that every time.”
