17-day-old child dies of injuries in Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS — A 17-day-old girl died Monday, three days after the Kannapolis Police Department began investigating a report that the child had been assaulted.
The Department of Social Services reported to the Police Department on Friday that the girl, who lived in Kannapolis, may have been assaulted.
The child was initially taken to Carolinas Medical Center Northeast then later transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Main.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
Officers with the Felony Investigation Unit of the Police Department are collecting evidence and interviewing people who may have knowledge of the incident.
