Catawba’s women’s basketball team lost at Queens 69-63 on Monday.
Catawba forced 28 turnovers, but it was beaten on the boards 47-29 and shot a chilly 34.7 percent.
Pamela Muldrow was 3-for-3 on 3-pointers and scored 22 points to lead the Indians. Brooke Whitley added 14 points.
Marissa Hudley scored 20 points for the Royals (2-3), who led almost wire-to-wire.
Catawba’s women play host to Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to open the SAC season. L-R’s women (5-1) are led by Denise Moore, Amber Holt and Jami Safrit.

n Catawba men
Catawba sixth man Rob Fields is the SAC Player of the Week for men’s basketball.
The junior guard from Orangeburg, S.C., averaged 18 points a game and shot 89 percent from the line in three victories.
Catawba (6-0) plays host to Lenoir-Rhyne at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in an early SAC matchup.
Antonio Houston leads the Indians in scoring (19.8 per game) and rebounding (6.3).
Fields averages 15.7 points a game. Cliff Burns (Davie) averages 13.5 points and 5.2 boards and has blocked 16 shots. Dominique Reid averages 12.5 points and has 26 assists.
The Indians have topped 80 points five times.
Lenoir-Rhyne (3-2) is paced by Elliott McDowell, who scores 19.8 points a game.
D.J. Blackmon (13.8) and Josh Rudder (10.8) are other high-scoring Bears. Jon Hathcock, a freshman guard from Northwest Cabarrus, averages 3.4 points a game off the bench.
n Sam Moir Classic
The Sam Moir Christmas Classic opens this year at Catawba on Dec. 27, with semifinals on Dec. 29 and championships decided on Dec. 30.
There will be six games each day, beginning at noon.
Boys and girls teams from the six Rowan schools and Davie County will participate.
Salisbury’s teams are defending champions.
Pairings will be based on winning percentages, and No. 1 seeds will receive a first-round bye.
Ties for seeds will be broken by head-to-head competition or by coin flip if teams didn’t meet.
n Prep hoops
East Rowan is home against Statesville, Carson entertains West Iredell, and South Rowan plays host to North Iredell tonight in NPC openers.
Two jayvee and two varsity games are played at one site. Girls varsity games usually begin in the neighborhood of 6:30, with the varsity boys to follow.
n North Rowan travels to Davie County tonight.
The girls game starts at 6, with the boys tipping off at about 7:30.
D.J. Hipps leads North’s boys (0-1) while Drew Absher has scored 50 points in three games for Davie (1-2).Davie’s girls are 1-2 while North is 0-1. Quon Cuthbertson scored 14 points in North’s opening loss to Carson.
n West’s NPC games with Mooresville have been postponed because of football considerations.
West does plan to play at North Rowan Thursday in a non-conference matchup.
n A.L. Brown opens SPC play at Sun Valley. Demarcus “Smoke” Phifer has topped 30 points twice for Brown, which is playing without its football athletes.
n Butterball race
The recent Butterball 5K Run/Walk at The Forum had more than 100 participants ranging in age from 4 to 71.
The turnout was large despite 22-degree temperatures. Proceeds benefited Prevent Child Abuse Rowan.
The race winner was Bob Marchinko in 15:48. He won $500 in gas cards.
Robert Miller was second in the men’s division in 16:08 and won $250 in gas cards.
Salisbury High’s Philip Tonseth was third in 18:43 and won $100 in gas cards.
Gray Stone’s Hunter Latimer won the women’s division in 21:02 and $500 in gas cards, which she donated to Prevent Child Abuse Rowan.
Marie Torrence was second in the women’s division in 21:22 and won $250 in gas cards.
Finishing third was Elizabeth Taylor, who finished in 22:15 and won $100 in gas cards.
Major sponsors for the event were Wilco/Hess, Team Chevrolet and Anderson Dental Group.
n ASU QB is finalist
Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards has been voted one of three finalists for the Walter Payton Award that is presented to the nation’s top FCS Subdivision player.
Edwards joins James Madison quarterback Rodney Landers and Western Illinois running back Herb Donaldson.
n Campbell Classic
Sacred Heart’s Jack Campbell Memorial Hoops Classic raised $522 toward the Campbell Scholarship given annually to a Salisbury High senior.
Jack’s mother, Cam, accepted the donation from Green Beret staff sergeant Ben Betner, who was a teammate of Campbell’s at Salisbury.
Campbell was a basketball, soccer and baseball captain at SHS and an All-State goalkeeper. He died of cancer in 2005.
Three games were played in the Hoops Classic.
Banks Fisher scored 15 points to lead the Sacred Heart boys to a 36-34 decision over the Sacred Heart girls. Kelly Dulkoski scored 18 for the girls.
White defeated Yellow 30-19 in the ladies alumni game.
In the male alumni game, Yellow defeated White. James Kyger was leading scorer with 22 points. Jay Duke had 16, Andy Dinse 12 and Johnny Kyger 10.
Thanks were extended to Sacred Heart AD Frank Cardelle, current coaches Steve Fisher and Tricia and Derron Dulkoski, former coaches Randy Cox, Mark Dinse, Tim Hennie and Owen Miller, and the 40 Sacred Heart alumni who participated in the event.
n Pfeiffer recruits
Pfeiffer’s women’s basketball program signed 5-foot-6 guard Celeste Caudill, who averaged 18.2 points a game at Alleghany as a junior. Caudill is a solid 3-point shooter who has already scored more than 1,000 career points.
The Falcons also landed 5-9 guard Brittany Cox. Cox averaged 8.6 points a game for 1A state champion Bishop McGuinness.
n Pfeiffer’s softball program signed pitcher Kayla Arrington (Reagan), pitcher/utility player Mariah Chalk (Fred T. Foard) and second baseman Yvette Gonzalez (South Stokes).
n Overseas basketball
Donte Minter (West Rowan) scored 19 points and had seven rebounds for his pro team in Portugal on Monday. Minter averages 18.0 points and 8.7 rebounds.
n Damien Argrett (South Rowan, Pfeiffer) is averaging 8.5 points and 4.4 rebounds in Poland.
n Bryan McCullough (North Rowan) is with a new team in Hungary. McCullough now suits up for Dombovar and scored 15 points in his first outing for his new squad.
n Carlos Dixon (South) is averaging 12.5 points a game in Argentina.
n Phillip Williams (West) averages 7.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in Lithuania.
