Jesus was sent to earth by God so that all may see the Glory of God. He lived a short, but blameless life; free of sin. All sin was carried to the cross, so that those who would come to know Him, and ask Him, could also be forgiven. The debt that is sin was prepaid. Here are three points on the “servant-style” leadership Jesus displayed.

Jesus lead by example: How many times have you been let down by leaders in your life? Remember: Jesus never fails. The Bible is the living, breathing, infallible Word of God. He may have been the Savior of the world, but Jesus was a servant. He came to serve, He served, and He commanded others to serve. Mark 1:17 NIV reads, “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” Also reference John 13:15 NIV, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” And finally, 1 Peter 2:21 NIV, “To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, should follow in his steps.”

He was clear as to what was to come: Even though Jesus spoke in parables, I often think as a writer of how He painted “word pictures” for His followers. Analogies can be understood. They have meaning that is applicable; both in nature, the human world, and our application thereof. John 14:1-4 NIV reads, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

His prophecy was fulfilled: Look no further than Mark 15:33-34, “At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?). He was wrapped in linen, removed from the cross, placed in a tomb and a stone rolled at the entrance to close it. Thankfully, that is not where the story ends. As the great hymn is sung, “Up from the grave He arose!”

We can always lead by the Word of God. It is our manual. We can trust in it unconditionally. There is an appropriate application in every verse. Try reading Proverbs, a chapter a day for one month. Find one or two verses. Write them on a piece of paper and keep it in your pocket that day. Without coincidence, you will find something throughout the day directly related to the verse you had written, and it will be applicable in some manner.

Lead by example with the idea of serving others, be clear with what you say and do as you would expect of others, watch the outcome from your appropriate thoughts and actions. Make it a habit to lead as Jesus did, and your people will follow.
