Junior Brooke Whitley posted her first career double-double to lead Catawba past Livingstone 69-57 in women’s basketball on Tuesday at Goodman Gym.
Whitley (North Stanly) recorded career highs with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Redshirt freshman Dana Hicks, playing in her first game for the Indians (6-4), also posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Kisha Long scored eight points, grabbed five rebounds and had five assists.
Livingstone (2-6) grabbed a 9-2 lead early, but Catawba scored eight straight points to take its first lead at 10-9 on a jumper by Pamela Muldrow at the 13:48 mark.
The Blue Bears held one last lead as Kalyela Josephs answered with a pair of free throws. Two free throws by Hicks put Catawba up for good at 12-11 with 13:02 remaining.
The free throws by Hicks started a 19-2 run that pushed Catawba’s lead to 29-13 with 6:51 to go. Whitley had two of her 3-pointers in the run and finished the half with 13 points. Catawba took a 37-23 lead to the break as Livingstone hit on just 29 percent from the field. Catawba held a 31-20 edge on the boards.
Catawba, which scored 26 points off 25 LC turnovers, led by as many as 26 points in the second half before Livingstone closed the game on a 17-3 run.
Montiya Harrison led Livingstone with 18 points and five steals, while Brittany Wright (Richmond, VA) had 13 points and seven boards.
Rashida Elbourne pulled down 10 rebounds for the Blue Bears.
– Salisbury freshmen
Salisbury’s ninth-grade boys basketball team defeated Ledford at Salisbury 75-47 on Tuesday.
The Hornets (1-0) used balanced scoring and smothering defense for the win.
Leading scorers for Salisbury were B.J. Woods with 16 points, Deqwan Robertson with 14 and Cavare Hilley with 10.
Salisbury’s next game in Jan. 6.
– Prep hoops
Catawba signee Elizabeth Merritt scored 12 points for East Davidson’s undefeated girls in a 61-31 romp against North Davidson on Tuesday night.
Anna Freeman had 15 points, 13 rebounds and five assists for the Golden Eagle (7-0).
– Curry honored
Davidson junior guard Stephen Curry has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week for his performance in two Wildcat victories.
It’s the fourth time this season and 12th time in his career that Curry has earned the honor.
The junior guard averaged 34.0 points, eight assists and 2.5 steals a game.
The nation’s scoring leader with 31.9 points per game, Curry netted all 10 of Davidson’s points in a decisive 10-4 run as the Wildcats defeated West Virginia at Madison Square Garden last Tuesday in the Jimmy V Classic.
– West jayvee boys
West Rowan’s jayvee boys basketball team topped Lake Norman 53-39.
Isiah Cuthbertson and Maurice Warren scored 12 points each for the Falcons. Kujuan Phillips and Dinkin Miller had eight each.
* In a 67-55 victory against North Rowan, Warren had 20 points, and Kevin Turner scored 18.
Miller and Ron Wood had eight each.
* Warren scored 13 points to pace a 52-45 victory against North Rowan. Jonah Marsh had nine. Turner and Wood scored eight apiece.
* West lost to Northwest Cabarrus 70-59 on Tuesday night.
Phillips scored 23 points for the Falcons. Warren had eight, and Jarvis Morgan had six.
* West jayvee girls
West Rowan’s jayvee girls basketball team beat Northwest Cabarrus 47-22 on Tuesday. Allison Dutton led the Falcons with nine points. Moriah Leach scored six. Brittney Barber had four.
– Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s girls basketball team topped Salisbury Academy 34-6.
Kelly Dulkoski led the Dolphins (14-2) with 17 points.
Katelyn Storey had seven points, and Alison Sobataka and Lauren Gray had for each.
Alexandra Drye scored four points for the Jaguars.

Terris Sifford (West Rowan) scored 39 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for his team in his most recent outing in Italy.
– College hoops
Tracey Croner (East Rowan) scored 15 points for Guilford in an 87-64 loss against Warner on Tuesday night.
