Elizabeth K. Hubbard of Granite Quarry celebrated her 90th birthday on a two-hour sunset cruise aboard the Spirit of Baltimore cruise ship on Dec. 13, 2008 in Baltimore Md.
Joining Mrs. Hubbard were her nine children, 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grand children. Each guest received a red or green lei as they boarded the ship.
Fifty-six family and friends attended the cruise, coming from Alabama, Georgia, Maryland, New York, North Carolina and Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Hubbard was born Dec. 13, 1918 in Stanly County. She has five daughters living in Rowan County: Libby, Elaine, Iris, Tangy and Henrietta. Son Dolan lives in Tomonium, Md., Rebecca resides in Durham, JVan lives in Washington, D.C., and Henry lives in Hyattsville, Md..
An after gathering was held in the Harborview room of the Holiday Inn Express where each guest was given an opportunity to record a DVD message, Mrs. Hubbard thanked the Lord for “living these 90 years and being able to see her children grow up to become productive citizens.”
When asked what she attributes her longevity to Mrs. Hubbard replied “God’s blessings upon me. I never thought I would live this long.” Clogging all-stars
Chelsea Denton and Lacee Whitlatch had the honor of being chosen for the NC Allstar 2008 Clogging Team. They were two of 12 chosen statewide and were picked for their enthusiasm, skill and exceptional ability to work as a team.
Chelsea and Lacee clog locally with the Crescent Cloggers at the Salisbury Civic Center. Chelsea is the daughter of David Denton and Teresa Uphoff and Lacee is the daughter of Dave and Tammy Whitlatch.
Literacy training
The Rowan Council Literacy Council has just completed a Laubach workshop for new tutors. The workshop was conducted by trainers Clyde Harriss, Phyllis Martin and Carolyn Myers.
The training is for non-professional people who would like to help others improve their reading skills or teach English as a Second Language to foreign-born residents.
Tutors completing the 13- hour course were: Laurie Lee, Eula McCleave, Dan Rattray and Sallie White.The Literacy Council offers tutoring services to any adult 16 and older. Anyone wanting to register for the next workshop or to receive tutoring help should call the Literacy Office at 704-216-8266.
Rowan County Literacy Council is a Distinguished Agency of Rowan County United Way.
East Spencer reunion
The classes of 1940s-1950s of East Spencer High School held their joint reunion on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 at the Spencer Moose Lodge.
The theme was “Fall Fiesta” and fall decorations were used.
President Rae S. Goodman opened the meeting. The Rev. Cecil Myrick gave the invocation.
The class of 1958 was recognized for its 50th anniversary of graduation. The members of the 1958 class who attended were: Lois Bass Daye, Jack Daye, Mary Jo Small Benfield, Vander Benfield Jr., Georgia Miller Almond, Ralph Almond, Wanda Robinson Gilliand, Bill Gilliand, Phoebe Taylor Nunn, Marvin Nunn, Carol McDowell Smith, Mary Lee Ketchie, and Joe Poole.
The school song was led by Martha Julian Hoffner and memories of school days was presented by Rae S. Goodman.
The deceased classmates were remembered with a memorial service and a representative from each class lit a candle in their memory.
Larry Goodman read a poem “What Is Thanksgiving?”
Charles Huffman sang “The Ninety and Nine” and was accompanied by pianist Julia Nannie Thompson.
Entertainment was a skit given by class members. Door prizes were given.
New officers and class representatives elected were: President Ruby Kluttz Goodman, Vice President Jimmy Julian, Secretary Phoebe Nunn Taylor, Co-Treasurers Doris Goodman Ludwick and Rae S. Goodman.
To end the reunion the group sang “God Be With You ’til We Meet Again.”
Another reunion will be held in two years.
Skateboard winners
SkateCity Skate Shop held a “Game of Skate” contest on Friday, Nov. 28, during Downtown Salisbury’s “Holiday Night Out.”
Skateboarders took turns performing tricks. The winner was the skateboarder who did the trick that no one else could duplicate.
The winners were first place, John Owen of Rockwell and second place, Taylor Kluttz of Rockwell.
