TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ó Sam Young kept Pittsburgh unbeaten on a night in which the Panthers weren’t making many shots.
Young had 21 points, including two critical baskets in the final 1:51, and the third-ranked Panthers overcame a 33-percent shooting effort in a 56-48 win at Florida State.
A tip-in from Young broke a 48-48 tie, and he hit a jump shot with a minute left that gave the Panthers a 52-48 advantage.
“The guy made great plays,” FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said. “They made the plays they had to make in that minute stretch and we missed ours.”
Pitt (12-0) nearly wasted a 17-0 run that gave it a 43-34 lead with 8:53 left. FSU (11-2) tied the game at 48 on Uche Echefu’s jumper.
Toney Douglas scored 20 points to lead the Seminoles, who shot 29.8 percent. No other FSU player had more than two field goals.
“This is one of those games where you’re in foul trouble, didn’t shoot well and our defense needed to be there throughout,” Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. “Our defense was there for 40 minutes.”
