Salisbury Civitans award nine scholarships

SALISBURY — The Civitan Club of Salisbury awarded scholarships totaling $13,500 during its annual Scholarship Day luncheon on March 1 at the Country Club of Salisbury.
The awards included five $1,500 college scholarships to students at Catawba College, Livingstone College and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. Four high school scholarship winners of $1,500 each were also recognized.
The nine 2018 scholarship awards presented include:
• The Dr. Walter Low Tatum Scholarships in Nursing went to two people: presented to Mandy Dalton of Mint Hill, a second-year student in the practical nursing program at RCCC; and Tonia Thorpe of Charlotte, who will graduate in 2018 from the associate degree nursing program at RCCC.
• The John Nelson Haden Scholarship in Music, presented annually to a music major at Catawba College, went to Hannah Addair of Salisbury. She is a senior majoring in music worship arts with a minor in religion..
• The Dr. Jack Knox Scholarship in Education, presented to an education major at Livingstone College, went to sophomore Justin Richey of Stockbridge, Georgia. He plans to become a middle school social studies teacher.
• The Rev. Milton B. Faust Scholarship in Education, presented to a student in the teacher education program at Catawba, went to senior Stacey Wagoner of Lexington, an elementary education major.
• The Michael Yang Civitan Scholarship, presented annually to a senior at West Rowan High School, went to Stacey Ketchie, daughter of Matthew and Cheri Ketchie of Woodleaf. She plans to major in statistics in college next fall.
• The Morton Lerner Memorial Civitan Scholarship, presented annually to a senior at Salisbury High School, went to Anna Patel, daughter of Neil and Karen Patel of Salisbury. She plans to major in biology in college next fall.
• The Rev. William K. Adams Memorial Scholarship, presented annually to a North Hills Christian School senior, went to Dean Gilmore, son of Terry and Deborah Gilmore of China Grove. He plans to study political science next fall at the University of South Carolina.
• The Clifford Peeler Humanitarian Scholarship, presented annually to a senior at either Salisbury, North Rowan, West Rowan or North Hills Christian School, went to Julia Honeycutt, a senior at Salisbury High. The daughter of Bob and Leigh Ann Honeycutt of Salisbury, she plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for pre-dental studies.
The recipients, their family members and representatives of each school joined members of the Civitan Club at the awards luncheon. Scholarship committee Chairman Marny Hendrick presided.
The scholarships are funded through proceeds from club projects as well as income from the Civitan Club Charitable Foundation’s endowment. The faculty and department members at the three institutions select the five college award winners. The four high school scholarships are awarded based on a competitive application process.
The scholarship committee selects winners with assistance from school guidance departments.
“Our scholarship program is one of the highlights of our Civitan year,” said club President Mark Curran. ”We feel this scholarship program is one of the best investments we can make as a service organization to our community. It is important to recognize and encourage academic excellence and good citizenship in our young people.”
