CHINA GROVE — Carson’s baseball team got back on track with a 5-0 non-conference win against Robinson on Friday.

Owen White (2-0) struck out eight batters in five innings, and Cameron Prugh finished the shutout.

Carson (2-3) played errorless baseball and cruised after scoring four runs in the third.

Prugh and freshman C.P. Pyle had RBIs.

Jason White and Max Agnew had the only hits for the Bulldogs.

WILMINGTON — East Rowan batted around in an eight-run fifth inning and pounded Laney 12-2 on Friday in a non-conference game.

East (3-1) took the lead in the fourth inning when Trevor Scruggs produced a two-out, two-run single.

Jax Fitz had two hits in the fifth inning as the Mustangs blew the game open.

“We hit it all over the yard,” East coach Brian Hightower said.

Freshman Jake Hunter was strong on the mound for five innings.

Corbin Moss whacked three doubles. One of them was a two-run blow in that big fifth inning.

Fitz and Scruggs had three hits each. Hayden Setzer and Charlie Klingler had two hits each.

The Laney Bucs (3-1) took their first loss.

SALISBURY — Salisbury lost to West Davidson, 5-3, in Central Carolina Conference action on Friday.

West Davidson’s four-run first inning proved decisive.

Bo Rusher had a two-run single in the bottom of the first for the Hornets (4-1, 3-1 CCC), and Chandler Lippard’s two-out double plated a run in the fifth.

Lippard and Griffin Myers had two hits each.

Joe Steinman pitched a complete game for the Hornets. He pitched very well after the first. He allowed five hits and two earned runs.

Hunter Hopkins pitched a complete game for the Green Dragons. Preston Dalton and Austin White drove in two apiece.

The teams split the season series.

WALLBURG — Ledford’s strong pitching shut down South Rowan for the second straight night.

Lefty Logan Whitaker, an N.C. State commit, held South to four hits in a 9-1 Central Carolina Conference victory on Friday.

Bryson Bebber had a run-scoring double for South (2-2, 2-2 CCC). Also getting hits were Jaxon Miller, Garrett Harrington and Eli Hiskey.

Matt Donahue pitched well for the Raiders after a rough first inning.

NORWOOD — Brett Tucker led off Friday’s game for North Rowan with a hit, but the Cavaliers didn’t get another one in an 11-0 Yadkin Valley Conference loss at South Stanly.

North starting pitcher Jordan Goodine allowed only one earned run, but North (3-2, 3-1 made five errrors.

The teams split the season series.

MOCKSVILLE —  Spencer Nifong pitched a complete game and Davie County scored four runs in the fourth to beat Southeast  Guilford, 6-1, on Friday in a non-conference game.

Prep softball

MIDWAY — Whitley Arnott struck out 10 batters and Anna Blume had two hits in South Rowan’s 2-1 Central Carolina Conference win against Oak Grove on Friday.

South scored both runs in the third inning.

CHINA GROVE — Carson softball finally got to play its first game, and it was a success.

The Cougars beat Robinson on Friday, 6-1.

Rylie Stewart pitched a complete game and struck out six.

Stewart and Katie Jewelll knocked in two runs each.

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan continues to swing the bats well, and smacked seven extra-base hits in Friday’s 11-7 win against Cox Mill.

Freshman Taylor Walton starred for the Falcons. She homered, tripled and was the winning pitcher in relief of Hannah Roberts.

Lauren Coughenour smacked her second homer of the season.

Parker Greene had three hits, including two doubles.  Morgan Corriher had a double and two RBIs. Hannah Pratt had a double. Mary Sobataka and Alexandra Linder had two hits each.

SALISBURY — Central Davidson rolled  against Salisbury, 15-0, in a three-inning game. Jaliyah Oats and Journie Dawson had the only hits for the Hornets (2-3, 1-3 CCC).

East Rowan lost to Mount Pleasant, 14-7, on Friday.

Catawba baseball

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. —  The Catawba Indians split Saturday’s doubleheader at Carson-Newman.

Catawba lost a lead in the eighth inning of the first game and fell, 6-5.

Catawba took the seven-inning nightcap, 9-3.

The teams will play the final game of the series today at 1 p.m.

Catawba (9-14, 5-3 South Atlantic Conference) got homers in the opener from Luke Setzer (East Rowan) and Heath Mitchem (Carson). Chance Bowden (Salisbury) had two doubles to add to his school-record total and drove in two.

In the second game, Jacob Nester went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Bowden, Mitchem, Setzer and Lee Poteat (West Rowan) had two hits.  Jackson Raper drove in three runs, and Setzer belted another homer.

DJ Laxton earned his second win of the season in relief. Connor Johnson (East Rowan) earned his second save. Johnson got the last 10 outs and had five strikeouts.

Pfeiffer baseball

DANVILLE, Va. — Nick Richmond tossed seven strong innings and Bryan Kowalski hit a three-run homer to lead Pfeiffer (11-4) to an 8-2 victory over Averett (5-14) in the opener of a three-game series on Friday.

Women’s hoops

Wingate dominated overtime and won 90-79 against Columbus State in the first round of the D-II Southeast Regional on Friday.  Caroline Averette  equaled her career-high output with 23 points.

Catawba softball

Catawba dropped two games to Emmanuel on Friday in Franklin Springs, Ga.

  The Indians lost 3-2 and 4-2 and fell to 11-11 on the season.

Carlee Brawley and Beth Ann Martin (South Rowan) had two hits each for Catawba in the first game. Brooke Walser took the loss in relief.

In the second game, Jordan Dean had two hitsfor the Indians. Walser threw a complete game but took another loss.

Catawba plays two at Southern Wesleyan today.
