Area Sports Briefs: Carson baseball wins in 13

CONCORD — Carson’s pitching staff basically was asked to pitch back-to shutouts — on the same night.

For the Cougars, that proved to be no problem.

Maddux Holshouser, Zach Starnes, Cameron Prugh and Logan Rogers kept putting up zeroes, while striking out 14 and walking none.  The Cougars finally got five  runs in the top of the 13th and beat Robinson, 5-0.

Carson evened its record at 3-3.

Carson only had two hits through the first 12 innings, but Cole Hales and freshman C.P. Pyle walked to start the decisive 13th.

Robinson turned Garrett Alewine’s sacrifice bunt attempt into a forceout at third for the first out, but Clayton Gilmore’s clutch  double to right plated Pyle with the game’s first run.

Leadoff man Brycen Holshouser then stroked a line-drive double to center for a 3-0 lead. Prugh singled home Holshouser for a 4-0 lead, and Prugh scored on a wild pitch for the fifth run.

Brycen Holshouser had two of Carson’s five hits.

Maddux Holshouser worked seven innings, throwing 93 pitches. He struck out eight  and allowed three hits.

Starnes hit a batter but he got two outs in the eighth before Prugh, who got the win, came in kept the game scoreless through 12. Prugh got  13 outs with 39 pitches. He struck out four and allowed two hits.

Young lefty Logan Rogers closed it out.

Robinson’s Jason White got a no-decision despite a tremendous effort. He worked eight innings and struck out 12 Cougars.

Noah Love shut out Carson for four innings before taking the loss in the 13th.

Max Agnew had two of Robinson’s six hits.

Four Bulldogs were plunked by pitches.

Prep softball

CONCORD — Maddie Trexler and Caroline Johnson had three hits each as East Rowan’s softball team won at Concord, 8-3, on Tuesday.

East (2-2)put together a three-run fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Ashlyn Fritz, Victoria Lewis and Haley Strange had two hits each for East. Strange was the winning pitcher.

Abby Bateski had two RBIs for the Spiders.

TYRO — South Rowan overcame a 5-1 deficit after two innings and beat West Davidson, 8-7, in Central Carolina Conference softball.

“We just wouldn’t quit,” South coach Dean Mullinax said. “We fought our way back into it.”

Whitley Arnott keyed South’s comeback. Pitching five innings in relief of Morgan Brown, she struck out nine and allowed only two hits.

South has power in the middle of the lineup and launched three more homers. Abby Blume, Summer McKeon and Karley Wood connected.

South (4-2, 3-2 CCC) used a four-run fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead. South went up 8-5 in the top of the sixth, and then held on.

South had 12 hits with McKeon, Blume, Mataya Reynolds and Brooke Lowery getting two each.

Wood had three RBIs,  Blume had two. McKeon, Ashlyn Plott and Jalee Rollins had one each.

Jenna Burkhart and Cailtin Mode smacked homers for the Green Dragons.

CHINA GROVE— Rylie Stewart pitched  a shutout, and Carson beat Cox Mill, 1-0, in non-conference softball on Tuesday.

Stewart struck out six and allowed six hits.

Maci Cooper scored the game’s only run in the first inning. Carson (2-0) had nine hits, with  Kary Hales, Stewart and Katie Jewell getting two each.

Prep soccer

SALISBURY — Salisbury’s soccer team managed to play on Tuesday and won 9-0 against Oak Grove in the Central Carolina Conference.

The Hornets (4-0, 3-0 CCC) played at home because of unplayable conditions at Oak Grove. They wore their road black uniforms at home  for the first time in coach Matt Parrish’s 17 seasons.

“Our field was in much better shape than I thought it would be, so Carson Herndon and I threw  sand on it this afternoon to make it safe to play,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said.

  Julia Honeycutt had three goals.  Freya Obermueller, Anna Grace Woolly, Maria Capito, Bethanie Stauffer, Emily Mann and Ellen Simons scored one each.  Assists were credited to Simons, Honeycutt, Olivia Dagenhart, Theresa Holland, Elle Kennedy and Clara Brown.

Mann and Caroline Clark combined for the shutout in goal.

“Everybody got to play heavy minutes,” Parrish said.

Salisbury plays at Ledford at 6 p.m. tonight.

Prep tennis

WALLBURG — Salisbury’s boys tennis team defeated Ledford, 7-2, in a key Central Carolina Conference matchup on Tuesday. Both teams were unbeaten in the CCC.

Winning in singles for the Hornets were Ethan McGee, Jander Rodas, Adam Drye, Sean Archer and Juan Salazar.

Winning in Doubles for  Salisbury (4-0) were Rodas/McGee and Archer/Salazar.

Salisbury plays at home today against East Davidson at 4:30 p.m.   

Prep basketball

Lexington High School  announced in an email to the Post, the Lexington Dispatch and other media outlets  on Monday that it has started a  search for a new boys basketball coach.

College baseball

Catawba’s Luke Setzer (East Rowan) hit his ninth homer of the season in an 8-6 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas (10-4) on Tuesday.

Catawba (10-15) got two hits, including a two-run double from Chance Bowden (Salisbury).

Bryan Ketchie (West Rowan) started and pitched four good innings, allowing one run. Harrison Baucom (West Rowan) and Jackson Raper had RBIs.

Catawba is home today against Indiana University (Pa.) at 3 p.m.

Ike Freeman (East Rowan) has started 14 games for UNC and is batting  .286 with a homer and nine RBIs. Among the UNC starters, Freeman has been the toughest to strike out. He’s fanned three times.

Montreat’s Ross Hoffner (Davie County) had two hits, including a third-inning homer, in a 4-3 loss to Reinhardt on Saturday.

John Owen (East Rowan) pitched well for Pitt Community College on Saturday. In a 9-8 win against Southeastern CC, Owen (1-0) pitched five innings and allowed two earned runs. He struck out seven and walked none.

Mars Hill catcher Matt Honeycutt (South Rowan) is batting .304 with four homers and 12 RBIs. Honeycutt hit two homers in a game against Newberry.

College softball

Pfeiffer’s softball program  is going to be hard to handle in the D-III ranks and is off to an 18-2 start.

Junior shortstop Vada Blue Sherrill is batting .556 with 10 homers, 38 RBIs and 28 steals.

Pfeiffer is scheduled to play a home doubleheader against Meredith today.

The next scheduled action for Catawba softball (12-11) is a home doubleheader today against North Georgia at 1 p.m.

Freshman shortstop Jordan Dean has three homers, seven doubles and a team-leading 18 RBIs. Delane Smith and Kaylee Cooke are batting .340.  Smith has four homers.

Newberry’s McKenzie Barneycastle (Davie County) has been one of the best freshmen in Division II. She’s batting .523 with 16 runs scored and eight doubles.

Sophomore Kaitlin Moore (A.L. Brown)  is batting .300 and leads Belmont Abbey in RBIs with 12.

NFL

After the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, N.C. A&T offensive tackle Brandon Parker (A.L. Brown) is rated as the 12th best offensive tackle available in the upcoming draft.

Parker currently projects to be picked in the fourth or fifth round. He has a wide base, coordinated feet and an unusually wide wingspan.

Officially, he measured 6-foot-7 1/2 and 305 pounds.

Catawba football

Catawba Football opened spring practice on Monday with meetings.

Fourteen practice days will precede the Blue-White Spring Game on April 14.

Alexandra Drye (Salisbury) has won all three of her spring singles matches for Christopher Newport.

YMCA swimming

In the NC Senior Championships, Ethan Knorr (Salisbury) was second in the 1650 freestyle.

In the NC 14U Championships, Emily Knorr won the mile. Katie Knorr scored in the meet.

The Knorrs were competing for the Greensboro Community Y team.

College golf

Catawba took fifth among 12 teams at the rain-shortened Hargett Memorial Invitational Men’s Golf Tournament. The event, which was held at the 6,725-yard, par-72 Monroe Country Club, was shortened to two rounds after Monday’s round was cancelled due to  weather.

Catawba’s Trey Burton and Jesse Vensel had eagles.

  

Mid. school tennis

The North Rowan Middle School tennis team improved to 2-0 with a victory over Knox.

Winning in singles for North Middle were Arizona Day, Tony Cerritos, Noah Williams, Lucas Berg, Ali Khatib and Fares Khaib.

Winning in doubles were Day/Cerritos, Williams/A. Khatib and Berg/F. Khatib.
