Area Sports Briefs Expanded: Salisbury wins in baseball, soccer, tennis, golf

LEXINGTON — Salisbury’s baseball team is off to an 8-1 start after winning at Central Davidson, 7-5, on Monday.
Coach Mike Herndon’s Hornets are 7-1 in the Central Carolina Conference.
Junior catcher/pitcher Bo Rusher sparked the Hornets. He homered, drov in two runs and saved the game for starter Joe Steinman when Steinman ran into trouble in the sixth.
Blaine Shellhorn and Jack Fisher had two hits each and had RBIs. Also knocking in runs were Blake Clark and Will Taylor.
It was 5-all after four innings, but the Hornets scored the two decisive runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Fisher and Shellhorn.
Central Davidson was able to contain Chandler Lippard, who came into the game batting .731, but other Hornets came through.

In other CCC action, first-year school Oak Grove stayed in the upper tier of the league by pounding South Rowan, 8-1.
NPC and SPC teams are scheduled to start conference play tonight, including West Rowan at East Rowan, although weather could be a factor.
Prep softball
KANNAPOLIS — East Rowan stayed on a roll, routing Northwest Cabarrus, 13-0, on Monday.
The Mustangs (6-2) rode a strong performance in the circle by Haley Strange. The freshman threw a one-hitter and fanned six.
Kaitlyn Samples, Victoria Lewis and Strange homered. Karley Teague and Samples had three hits each. Izzy Schroeder, Caroline Johnson and Lewis had two hits apiece.
East is scheduled to host West Rowan today.

SALISBURY — East Davidson had no trouble with Salisbury, rolling 19-1 in a three-inning Central Carolina Conference game played on Monday.
Allie Tuck drove in Salisbury’s only run. Tuck and Ellen Yang had hits.

CHINA GROVE — Carson edged A.L. Brown on Monday, 1-0, in a non-conference matchup.
Sarah Musselwhite scored for the Cougars (3-2), and Montana Gurganious had the shutout in goal.
• Carson also took the jayvee contest, 5-0, with Sydney Borst and Ariel Vargas scoring two goals each and Isabel Elizade getting one.

SALISBURY — Unbeaten Salisbury stayed on top in the Central Carolina Conference by beating East Davidson, 4-0 on Monday.
Caroline Cardelle, Lillie Rusher, Freya Obermueller, and Clara Brown scored for the Hornets (8-0, 6-0 CCC).
It was the first career goal for Brown, a freshman. An under-the-weather Julia Honeycutt was still a key distributor and had two assists, Rusher and Anna Grace Woolly had one apiece.
Emily Mann made three saves for the shutout in goal. Woolly had a big game for the Hornets defensively in the midfeld. Bethanie Stauffer played well in the back.
Next up for SHS is a big CCC match Wednesday night at North Davidson. Game time is 6 p.m.

LEXINGTON — South Rowan (7-2, 6-1) got a CCC road win, topping Lexington, 3-0.
Michelle Rivera had the shutout in goal. Madison Henry scored two more goals. Taylor Mauldin had a goal and an assist. Raquel Landaverde had an assist.

SALISBURY — Salisbury rolled in a CCC contest against South Rowan, 9-0, to stay undefeated. Roarke Burton, Ethan McGee, Jander Rodas, Adam Drye, Sean Archer and Juan Salazar had singles wins.

Prep golf
LEXINGTON — Salisbury shot 174 and won Monday’s Central Carolina Conference match at Sapona.
Alex Antosek and Will Fowler shot 39s for the Hornets. Hank Robins shot 42. Harrison Parrott shot 54.
East Davidson shot 178 for second place, while Ledford took third at 180. Ledford’s Tyler Partee was medalist with a 34.
South Rowan shot 194. Andrew Coward led the Raiders with a 38. Andrew Jackson was next at 46.

The Erwin Middle School Athletic Department is pleased to announce the inaugural Starr Forney Middle School Track Invitational that will take place Saturday, March 24, at East Rowan High School at 9 a.m.

Basketball camp
Former West Rowan, Virginia and Appalachian State player Donte Minter will be hosting a spring break basketball camp at West Rowan Middle School.
The camp will be on April 2-5 from 9 until 3 daily. The focus will be on ball handling, defense, shooting and much more.

College golf
UNC Greensboro’s Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) is competing in the Linger Longer Invitational co-hosted by Mercer and Kennesaw State in Greensboro, Ga.
Lyerly shot 1-under 71 on Monday and is even after two rounds. Lyerly birdied the final two holes for a 2-under 34 on the back-nine.

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — Catawba leads the field after one round of the Bank of TR Invitational Men’s Golf Tournament at the 6,931-yard, par-72 Columbia Country Club. The Catawba Indians lead Emmanuel by one shot after an opening 295. Southern Wesleyan is three shots back.
Mack Sheppard is in a three-way tie for second after he opened with an even-par round of 72. He is a shot back of leader Andrew Smith, of Emmanuel. He is tied with Erskine’s Jonathan Costello and Justin Ayanian, of Eckerd.
Catawba put three golfers in the top 10 after Monday’s first round. Tyler Mulkey (North Rowan) finished with a 73 and is in fifth. Trey Burton carded a 74 to tie for ninth.

MONROE, N.C. — Catawba is in 10th place after the opening round of the Wingate Challenge being played at the 5,968-yard, par-72 Rolling Hills Country Club. The Catawba Indians posted a 331 score and arejust two shots behind a trio of teams tied for seventh.
Lincoln Memorial leads after Monday’s first round with a 308 score. Wingate is three shots back with Lenoir-Rhyne and Young Harris four off the pace. Dominika Czudkova, of LMU, shot an even-par 72 to hold the first-round lead. She is two shots ahead of King’s Nicola Robertson.
Kaley Barts led Catawba with a 78 on Monday and is in 12th place. Victoria Hedrick was next with an 82 for 30th.
Salisbury Academy golf
Salisbury Academy won a seven-team middle school golf match at Warrior on Monday
The Jaguars’ score of 171 was seven shots better than second-place Community School of Davidson and nine better than third-place Sacred Heart. The Jaguars were led by co-medalist Will Webb, who shot 40. Also scoring for SA were Gigi Nagy (41), Warren Fesperman (43) and Harrison McCall (47).
