South Rowan junior Janiya Downs was named to the All-State third team by the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association. That’s for all classifications.

Downs averaged 21 points and turned in a double-double in almost every outing for the Raiders.

Downs was earlier named district player of the year.

Downs is also one of the Rowan nominees for the AP All-State team that will be announced in the coming weeks.

Cox Mill junior Wendell Moore Jr. was named by the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association as the  state’s player of the year after leading the Chargers to the 3A championship.

Cox Mill’s Rechon “Leaky” Black, a UNC signee, joined Moore on the All-State first team.

Northwest Guilford’s Liz Kitley was a first team pick.

A junior committed to Virginia Tech, she’s the daughter of former North Rowan star and Salisbury-Rowan Hall of Famer  Ralph Kitley.

College baseball

Catawba first baseman Chance Bowden has been named the SAC Baseball Player of the Week.

The senior from Salisbury High led Catawba to a 3-2 record last week, including a SAC series win over Tusculum. He batted .455 for the week, with two doubles and three home runs. Bowden   drove in 11 runs and scored nine. •••

UNC sophomore shortstop Ike Freeman (East Rowan) is riding a 9-for-14 hot streak and is now batting .355 with 14 RBIs.

  

College football

MOINES, Iowa — Former Livingstone quarterback Drew Powell passed for a touchdown and ran for three more scores, but it wasn’t enough. Powell’s Iowa Barnstormers fell to Sioux Falls on Sunday, 52-40.

Powell completed 9-of-19 passes for 111 yards for Iowa (2-1) and rushed for 93 yards on 18 carries. He had a long run of 18 yards.

QB Lorenzo Brown had a big day for the Storm (2-1), completing 22-of-26 passes for 241 yards and four TDs.

College tennis

Christopher Newport senior Alexandra Drye (Salisbury)  moved into a tie for fifth all-time at the school in doubles victories to highlight an 8-1 win over regionally ranked Centre College on Sunday.

Christopher Newport is ranked 26th in D-III and has won five in a row.

College golf

UNC Greensboro’s Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) competed in the Linger Longer Invitational co-hosted by Mercer and Kennesaw State in Greensboro, Ga.

Lyerly shot 73-71-77 — 221 and tied for 42nd at 5-over.

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C.   Catawba shot 299 in Tuesday’s second round of the Bank of TR Invitational men’s golf tournament.

Catawba slipped to fourth after leading after the first round  at the 6,931-yard, par-72 Columbia Country Club.

Southern Wesleyan rallied  to win the tournament.  Catawba finished six shots back.

Catawba’s Mack Sheppard finished in a tie for third. He posted a 145 score, shooting rounds of 72 and 73.

MONROE — Catawba moved up four spots in Tuesday’s final round of the Wingate Challenge women’s golf tournament.

The two-day event was held at the 5,968-yard, par-72 Rolling Hills Country Club. Catawba shot 646 for two rounds. Lenoir-Rhyne shot 615 to win the tournament. Catawba’s Kaley Barts was ninth at 154.

The CIAA announced a two-year agreement to partner with The Club at Viniterra in New Kent, Va., as the site of the CIAA Championships.

College swimming

Catawba’s  Joao Barreto qualified for the B final of the 200 butterfly at the NCAA II Swimming and Diving Championships  at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Barreto swam the second and third fastest times in school history in the 200 fly in finishing 16th. He posted a 1:48.78 in the prelim to qualify and came back with a 1:49.20 in the final. The 16th-place finish earned Catawba a point at the Championships to put the Indians in 32nd place.

College track

UNC Pembroke’s men are  ranked seventh in D-II.

  

Prep girls soccer

Bailey Walker scored a goal to lift East Rowan to a 1-0 win against Mount Pleasant on Monday.

Carlee Lowry made six saves for the Mustangs.

Concord junior Julia Patrum reached 100 career goals on Tuesday. She scored twice in a 9-3 loss to Cox Mill.

West Rowan star Cristyan Cabrera has committed to Pfeiffer.

Prep softball

South Rowan romped over Lexington on Monday, 20-0, in Central Carolina Conference action.

Jalee Rollins homered and drove in four runs. Whitley Arnott struck out seven of the nine batters she faced.

The West Rowan-East Rowan game was postponed on Tuesday and rescheduled for today at 5:30 p.m.

Riley Tucker pitched a shutout for Central Cabarrus in 3-0 SPC  softball win vs. A.L. Brown on Tuesday.

Tucker and Maranda Benton had two hits each for the Vikings.

The Wonders had eight hits, but Tucker kept them off the scoreboard.

The Salisbury Civitan Classic is set for April 5-6 at Salisbury Community Park, Hurley School Road.

Two fields will be in use. The plan is for this to be an annual event.

LEXINGTON — Salisbury shot 174 and won Monday’s Central Carolina Conference match at Sapona. Alex Antosek and Will Fowler shot 39s for the Hornets. Hank Robins shot 42. Harrison Parrott shot 54.

East Davidson shot 178 for second place, while Ledford took third at 180. Ledford’s Tyler Partee was medalist with a 34.

South Rowan shot 194. Andrew Coward led the Raiders with a 38. Andrew Jackson was next at 46.

Cannon School  won the Forsyth Country Day School Invitational golf tournament Friday at the Tanglewood Champions course.

The tournament had 16 teams  from  around the state and 96 players.

Cannon won the tournament by 18 shots. Cannon’s Charlie Barr was the medalist with a 70 and Michael Childress finished second with a 71. Both are from Salisbury.

Erwin track

The  Erwin Middle School Athletic Department is pleased to announce the inaugural Starr Forney Middle School Track Invitational that will take place Saturday, March 24, at East Rowan High School at 9 a.m.

Basketball camp

Former West Rowan, Virginia and Appalachian State player Donte Minter will be hosting a spring break basketball camp at West Rowan Middle School.

The camp will be on April 2-5 from 9 until 3 daily. The focus will be on ball handling, defense, shooting and much more.

Registration is through http://www.defenderssportsacademy.com. The cost of the camp is $30.

Thirty-two GARS members played at Lexington Golf Club.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Larry Petrea with a net of 65.90.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Clive Mahaffey with a net of 63.37.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Mike Sides with a net of 65.36.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Jim Brown with a net of 66.74.

Petrea had low gross with a 72 and Mahaffey had low net with a 63.37.

Mahaffey, 82, shot 79, while Buddy Barger, 83, shot 82.

Savoring the spring in the air, the team of Melinda Rigger, Walt Kincaid, Ralph and Pam Carver jumped into first place, eclipsing the second-place team of Susan Houston, David Huneycutt and Azalee Story in McCanless Couples play.

Melinda Rigger was closest to the pin.  Houston had longest putt.

   

Salis. Academy golf

Salisbury Academy won a seven-team middle school golf match at Warrior on Monday.

The Jaguars’ score of 171 was seven shots better than second-place Community School of Davidson and nine better than third-place Sacred Heart.

The Jaguars were led by co-medalist Will Webb, who shot 40. Also scoring for SA were Gigi Nagy (41), Warren Fesperman (43) and Harrison McCall (47).

A Healthy Heart Fair fundraiser organized by North Rowan and Catawba’s Henderson Lentz will take place at North Rowan High on Saturday, March 24. Concessions will be sold. Admission is $5 per person.
