Area Sports Briefs: Weather wins; CCC golf, Salisbury softball are played

Wet weather and wet fields wiped out most high school sports action again on Wednesday, and today’s rescheduled action is also in question.

They were able to play golf at Warrior in China Grove, with  the Central Carolina Conference schools competing.

Ledford shot 165 to win. Salisbury and West Davidson tied for second at 174.

Oak Grove’s Jacob Pendry shot 37 for medalist honors.

Alex Antosek shot 38 to   lead the Hornets. Hank Robins (41), Will Fowler (43) and Harrison Parrott (52) were the other Salisbury scorers.

Andrew Coward shot 41 to lead South Rowan, with Andrew Jackson carding a 42.

Prep softball

WELCOME — North Davidson stayed undefeated with an easy 19-0 win against Salisbury on Wednesday.

The Black Knights only batted twice in the three-inning contest. They scored 11 runs in the first and eight in the second.

Riley Lingerfelt pitched a perfect game and struck out all nine Hornets she faced.

Meagan Donovant hit a grand slam for the Black Knights. Haden Womble drove in three runs.

College football

Wesley Jefferies, a defensive lineman who has played the last two years at Feather River College, a  California juco program, has signed with the University of North Dakota.

Jefferies starred at North Rowan High.

College softball

Catawba is scheduled to play a doubleheader today at Whitley Field against Lenoir-Rhyne, starting at 2 p.m.

College baseball

Montreat’s Ross Hoffner (Davie County) went 3-for-6 with two doubles and scored three runs ina    10-9 loss against Brevard on Wednesday.

 

College lacrosse

WINGATE — Freshman Brooklyn Tilley scored on a free-position shot with 45 seconds left to lift visiting Catawba to a 12-11 win over Wingate in SAC women’s lacrosse   on Thursday afternoon at Gill Field.

The  Indians moved to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fell to 2-8 and 1-2.

  Catawba got four goals from Tilley, while Katie Barth added two goals and an assist. Gianna Pezzulo scored a goal and assisted on three. Madison Anslemo posted 10 saves, including three after Wingate had tied the game at 10.

Kendall Wells scored three goals with two assists for Wingate.

Akers also scored three goals. Emily Keltron added two goals with Ellie Gottschalk assisting on two. Marly Blycher entered in goal for Wingate for the final 24 minutes and made eight saves.

Catawba travels to Lincoln Memorial on Saturday for a noon contest.

WINGATE, N.C. — Host Wingate held Catawba to one second-half goal in posting a 12-5 win in South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Gill Field.

Both teams are 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the SAC.

Joe Barber led Catawba with two goals.  Kevin Geiger stopped nine shots.

Alex Llerandi tallied three goals for Wingate.

Catawba travels to Lincoln Memorial on Saturday for a 3 p.m.matchup with the Railsplitters.
