Rowan-Cabarrus Community College has a preparation/review course for people planning to take the N.C. Residential General Contractor License examination.
The class will meet from 6-8 p.m. Thursdays from Feb. 12 to April 16 at the North Campus (Salisbury) Building 200. Jeff Duncan of JJ’s Construction Co. in Granite Quarry will serve as the course instructor.
There is a $55 fee for the 20-hour course, plus textbooks, which are available in the college’s bookstore. Advanced registration is required.

What you need to start a business
The Small Business Center (SBC) at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is offering a course that gives entrepreneurs step-by-step instructions on how to start a small business.
The SBC will offer the REAL (Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning) course 6-9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Feb. 3 through April 7. There is a $55 fee for the 10-session course. The class will meet at RCCC’s Cabarrus Business & Technology Center, 660 Concord Parkway N. in Concord.
The REAL course will provide instructions on starting a small business in Cabarrus or Rowan County. Students will go from business idea to business start up, with the goal of completing a written business plan.
The course will help students identify their strengths as an entrepreneur, assess the feasibility of their business idea, and examine important factors, such as start-up costs, effective marketing techniques, legal considerations, funding and others.

Four complete food safety course
Four employees of Rowan Regional Medical Center’s Food and Nutrition Services department recently completed a nationally recognized program in food safety.
Jeanne Dimarzio, Betty Jones, Renee Fesperman and Beth Bates of Rowan Regional Medical Center Food and Nutrition Service and Sandra Morrison and Jessica Snider of Rowan Regional Medical Center Hospitality Shop recently completed ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification.
ServSafe is nationally recognized and accredited. To date, more than 3 million ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certifications have been awarded in the country.
The ServSafe program is recommended for food service operations by the Rowan County Health Department. Certification is achieved by completing 16 hours of classroom instruction and a written examination.
Real estate group at new meeting place
The Concord-Area Subgroup meetings of the Metrolina REIA (Real Estate Investors Association) have moved to a new location.
The group previously met at McCabe’s Steakhouse in Kannapolis but for 2009 will be meeting at Logan’s Roadhouse, 2431 Wonder Drive, Kannapolis. The meeting dates and times are the same.
The organization meets the first Thursday of every month from 6-7 p.m. for networking and 7-8 p.m. for an educational program, questions and answers and more networking.

Lutheran Services affiliate honored Another Lutheran Services for the Aging affiliate has earned a NOVA (New Organizational Vision Award) license from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
Representatives from state and regulatory agencies presented Lutheran Home-Albemarle with the license at a ceremony in Albemarle on Jan. 6.
NOVA is a national initiative created to improve resident care by advancing the education of certified nursing assistants and other direct care workers. The General Assembly of North Carolina enacted the legislation for NOVA as part of the state’s strategy to recruit and retain direct care workers.
Only three other nursing homes in the state have achieved NOVA status, one of those being the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks in Salisbury. Administrator Priscilla Vint accepted the award.
