Food Lion Feeds partners with local Meals on Wheels feeding agencies to help feed seniors

SALISBURY — Beginning March 9, Food Lion Feeds began partnering with local Meals on Wheels agencies during the 16^th Annual March for Meals campaign to help feed seniors fighting hunger in several different regions across the grocer’s 10-state operating area.

Throughout the effort, Food Lion associates have partnered with local Meals on Wheels affiliate agencies to deliver nutritious meals to nearly 2,000 seniors who rely on this vital safety net to remain healthy and independent in their own homes.

The grocer has also made a $1,500 donation to each organization through the grocer’s hunger relief initiative, Food Lion Feeds, to help each agency in their mission to feed seniors in need, in addition to food donations and other contributions.

“Meals on Wheels is a wonderful program that brings meals to seniors in their own homes, and we are proud to partner with local affiliates during the organization’s annual March for Meals event,” said Emma Inman, director of external communications and community relations at Food Lion. “Food Lion is committed to fighting hunger across our 10-state footprint to make sure no one has to choose between dinner and rent or gas and groceries. March — Richmond, Virginia — FeedMore Meals on Wheels

Food Lion Feeds partnered with FeedMore’s Meals on Wheel program to provide as many as 1,000 meals to 850 homebound seniors and disabled neighbors battling hunger in the greater Richmond area. Local Food Lion associates partnered with the organization to deliver meals to homebound neighbors. Food Lion Feeds also made a $1,500 donation to the organization to help them continue their mission to feed seniors fighting hunger.

March 16 — Fayetteville, North Carolina — Cumberland County Council on Older Adults

Food Lion Feeds partnered with the Cumberland County Council on Older Adults Meals on Wheels program to provide meals to nearly 400 seniors fighting hunger in Cumberland County. Local Food Lion associates donated fresh fruit and partnered with the organization to deliver the meals and fruit. Food Lion Feeds also made a $1,500 donation to the organization to help them continue their mission to feed seniors fighting hunger.

March 16 — Columbia, South Carolina — Senior Resources Inc.

Food Lion Feeds partnered with Senior Resources Inc. to provide meals to 300 seniors battling hunger in the greater Midlands area. Local Food Lion associates partnered with the organization to make the deliveries. Food Lion Feeds also sponsored the organization’s 5K race on March 10 and donated water and bananas for runners. In addition, the grocer made a $1,500 donation to the organization to help them continue their mission to feed seniors fighting hunger.

March 29 – Charlottesville, Virginia – Meals on Wheels of Charlottesville/Albemarle

Food Lion Feeds will partner with Meals on Wheels of Charlottesville/Albemarle to provide meals to 250 seniors battling hunger in the greater Charlottesville area. Local Food Lion associates will donate fresh fruit, pack meals and then partner with Meals on Wheels to make the deliveries. Food Lion Feeds will also make a $1,500 donation to the organization to help them continue their mission to feed seniors fighting hunger.

Through Food Lion Feeds, the company has made a commitment to provide 500 million meals to individuals and families in need by the end of 2020. Since the launch of Food Lion Feeds in 2014, the grocer has donated more than 280 million meals through in-store campaigns, in-store food rescue programs and associate volunteerism.

Local sales manager appointed to Railroad-Shipper Transportation Advisory Council

SALISBURY — Paul Hoben, a Stalite sales manager in Salisbury, has been appointed by Ann Begeman, the acting chairman of the Surface Transportation Board, to serve a 3-year term on the Railroad-Shipper Transportation Advisory Council (RSTAC) as a small shipper representative.

The Railroad-Shipper Transportation Advisory Council (RSTAC) has 15 appointed members that consist of senior officials representing both large and small shippers and large and small railroads.

In addition, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation and the five board members serve as ex-officio members.

The RSTAC provides advice on regulatory, policy and legislative issues, as appropriate, to the STB Chairman; the Secretary of Transportation; the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation; and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Janet Ward Black receives Advocate’s Award

GREENSBORO — Attorney Janet Ward Black was recently presented with the
prestigious Advocate’s Award by the Litigation Section of the North Carolina Bar Association.

Black was given this honor on Feb. 7 during a reception at the Undercurrent
restaurant in Greensboro. It was hosted by the current chair of the Litigation Section, Amanda Martin.

The Litigation Section of the North Carolina Bar Association presents the Advocate’s Award to attorneys “in recognition of a life and career exemplifying the art and skill of advocacy, client and community service, the highest degree of professionalism, and dedication to the pursuit of justice.”

Recipients of the award have demonstrated the highest ethical standards, great skill and ability as a litigator or trial lawyer, and commitment to the very best work product.

They also demonstrate a true commitment of service to clients, a respect for
and love of the law, are held in the highest regard by both bench and bar, are dedicated to
the community and the bar with a track record of pro bono or volunteer service, and serve as
an example of how to effectively balance both outstanding professional performance and other life endeavors.

Black is the first female attorney to receive the Advocate’s Award. She served as president of
the 16,000-member N.C. Bar Association (NCBA) and the 4,000-member N.C. Advocates for Justice. She is only the second attorney in history to be president of both organizations.

While president of the NCBA, she created a program — “4ALL” — that has helped over 100,000 North Carolinians speak to a lawyer at no charge.

Black is the principal owner of Ward Black Law in Greensboro. The firm represents
people in personal injury, workers’ compensation, veterans’ disability, family law and defective products litigation. With 38 lawyers and staff, Ward Black Law is one of the largest woman-owned firms in North Carolina.

Thrivent Member Network announces results from Salisbury Rise Against Hunger event

SALISBURY — The East Region Thrivent Member Network hosted a food packing party for the Rise Against Hunger organization that sends food overseas to the hungry.

The event took place March 11 at 4 p.m.

Over 90 Thrivent Financial members and church groups from Salisbury and surrounding areas attended the event to pack food for the hungry. Together they packed 10,000 packages of food. In addition, they had the opportunity to taste a sample of the food they were packing and hear more about the state of hunger in the world.

Richard Armenia from Rise Against Hunger said 21,000 people die each day from hunger around the world. Rise Against Hunger’s mission is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources.

Participants also had the opportunity to reflect on how hunger might affect them and their families.

This event was hosted by the East Region Thrivent Member Network, which is an organization of Thrivent Financial members in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The Thrivent member network enables members of our not-for-profit organization to engage and help others in local and worldwide communities. These may be related to fundraising, education and hands-on service activities and give members the opportunity to come together to do good.
