Hood Seminary honors 50th anniversary of MLK’s Death

April 4, at 7 p.m. in the Aymer Center, Hood Theological Seminary, in collaboration with Center for Faith & the Arts and Covenant Community Connection will host a free screening of the award winning documentary “Chairman Jones: An Improbable Leader.” The hour-long film is presented as a program of Cinema CFA.
James Henry Jones, a self-educated farmer, overcomes racism and lack of formal education to lead the fight to end nearly a century of education inequality in Northampton County, NC during the Jim Crow and Civil Rights Eras.
His improbable leadership transforms him and his community in unimaginable ways. A panel discussion, “21st Century Struggle for Justice: The Church’s Role,” follows the screening. Hood Theological Seminary is located at 1810 Lutheran Synod Drive.

 

KHA presents ‘The Visit’

KANNAPPOLIS — Kannapolis History Associates invites you to enjoy an evening with “J. W. And Mary Ella Cannon,” pioneers and founders of Kannapolis and Cannon Mills. It will be a short visit as “Mr. and Mrs. Cannon” will be returning to Kannapolis to get an update on how the area has changed and is progressing since they moved on to a “better place” many years ago. The A. L. Brown High School Drama Club presents “The Visit” which they have written, directed and produced. There will be time for questions. Monday, April 2 at 7 p.m. in the A. L. GOLD HILL — The Gold Hill Merchants’ Association invites artists, craft persons, and service providers to submit their application to participate in the 2018 Gold Rush Days Art and Crafts Festival to be held Saturday, May 12 in Historic Gold Hill. Applications may be found at www.goldhillnc.com

Rowan Public Library celebrates the NC Science Festival

Did you know that Reed Gold Mine in Midland is the site of the first documented gold find in the United States? And that the Old North State led the nation in gold production until 1848’s California gold rush?
On Monday, April 2, at 5 p.m., the Headquarters branch of Rowan Public Library, 201 W. Fisher St. will host Sara Blanchett, assistant manager of Reed Gold Mine. The Mine is one of 27 N.C. Historic Sites, a division of the N.C. Department of Natural and Culture Resources.
Blanchett will speak about John Reed’s discovery and how his family turned their land into a gold mining operation. She’ll also explain how gold is created after being pushed to the surface by volcanoes after spending thousands of years underground. Panning is a one technique used to find gold in the soil of a creek bed because the precious metal, twice as heavy as lead, will sink to the bottom of a pan.
Blanchett’s talk will be followed by gold panning demonstrations using portable standing troughs and soil from Reed Gold Mine. All are welcome to attend this free program and try their luck at finding gold.
The April 2 Reed Gold Mine program is an official event of the 2018 N.C. Science Festival and kicks off RPL’s participation in the month-long celebration. A statewide listing of Festival-approved events can be found at ncsciencefestival.org

 

Country farm and barn painting series

MT. ULLA — Local artist Cherrathee Hager is accepting new students in the four-week Country Farm and Barn painting series, starting April 3 at 10 a.m. at West Rowan Farm, Home and Garden.
Students will complete a painting each week while learning various techniques. All materials are supplied.
Register for the series in advance ($35 per class) or choose individual classes ($40 each).

Bible Study celebrates one-year anniversary with day of fun

EAST SPENCER — Noon-5 p.m. Saturday, March 31: The A’yanna Allen Bible Study will celebrate its one-year anniversary with a day of food, fun and fellowship, with a bounce house, face painting, Easter egg hunt, balloon release, popcorn, cotton candy and food.
