MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan’s baseball team won against North Rowan, 12-5, on Wednesday.

It was an ugly non-conference game. West (6-5) won its fourth in a row despite making seven errors.

West used six pitchers. Henry Hall got the win. He got the final out in the top of the fourth with the score 5-all, and West got a run inthe bottom of the inning on an error to take the lead for good.

Jordan Goodine, the second of three North pitchers, took the loss.

Goodine led the offense for North (3-9) with two hits. His double was North’s only extra-base hit.

McGwire Smith and Kobe Dupree had RBIs. Brett Tucker scored three runs.

Logan Sproul had two hits and two walks for the  Falcons.

Dillon Simpson drove in three runs. Cameron Graham knocked in two, and  Daniel Durham and Zeb Burns had RBIs,

Graham, Simpson, Mo Salazar and Payne Stolsworth had doubles.

North Rowan has a home game against YVC opponent North Moore tonight, while West Rowan goes to Carson for an NPC contest.

• West Rowan’s jayvees won against North Iredell, 16-0, on Tuesday.

WELCOME — East Rowan had its chances to hand North Davidson its first loss on Wednesday evening, but the Black Knights held on for a 2-1 non-conference victory.

East starting pitcher Will Brown struck out eight ND hitters and walked three. Jake Davis relieved Brown in the fifth.

Both North Davidson runs were unearned.  A dropped flyball was responsible for the first one and an infield error led to the second one.

Wayne Mize drove in Brown for East’s run.

East (6-4) had the tying run at third with no outs in the seventh, but a popup and a popped up bunt followed.

East plays at Statesville in the NPC tonight.

• North Davidson won the jayvee game, 13-2.

Prep softball

SALISBURY — West Davidson won against Salisbury, 17-1, on Wednesday in a three-inning Central Carolina Conference game.

Ellen Yang had a triple and drove in the run for the  Hornets. Allie Tuck also had a hit.

Prep golf

LEXINGTON — Ledford shot 172 and won a Central Carolina Conference match on Wednesday at Lexington Golf Club.

South Rowan was second at 181, with Andrew Coward shooting 34 for medalist honors. Andrew Jackson shot 44 for South. Next was Brett Amburn at 49. Alex Antosek shot 40 to lead Salisbury to third place. Hank Robins shot 42, and Will Fowler shot 47.

Prep soccer

THOMASVILLE — Salisbury didn’t play especially well but had no trouble with Thomasville on  Wednesday in its last outing  before spring break.

The Hornets (11-0, 9-0 Central Carolina Conference) got three goals from Piper Muire in a 9-0 win.

Julia Honeycutt had two goals and three assists. Carolina Cardelle scored two goals. Ellen Simons and Clara Brown added a goal each.

Lillie Rusher had three assists, while Theresa Holland had one.

Coach Matt Parrish praised the play of Holland and Brown.

LANDIS — South Rowan won against East Davidson, 3-0, in CCC action on Wednesday.

Madison Henry scored two goals, raising her total for the season to 30. She also assisted on a Taylor Mauldin goal. Mauldin and Raquel Landaverde had assists. Michelle Rivera had the shutout in goal for the Raiders  (9-3, 8-2 CCC).

Prep track

GRANITE QUARRY — In track and field on Tuesday, Cox Mill’s teams swept a meet that also included East Rowan, South Iredell and Concord.

East’s girls got wins from Katelyn Sprinkle (100 hurdles) and Victoria Trexler (100 hurdles).

East’s boys got wins from Christian Bennett (shot put), Sam Wall (triple jump), Chase Whitley (400) and Sean Incardona (800).  East also won the 4×800.

Prep tennis

LEXINGTON — Salisbury won its 13th straight match on Wednesday, beating Central Davidson for a Central Carolina Conference victory.

Roarke Burton, Ethan McGee, Jander Rodas-Palacios, Adam Drye, Sean Archer and Juan Salazar won in singles.

Drye/Burton, Archer/McGee and Jander-Palacios/Salazar won in doubles.

McGee lost his first set in No. 2 singles, but came back to win the second set and a tiebreaker.

Local golf

Thirty-four GARS members played at The Revival at Crescent.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Larry Petrea with a net of 65.27. Low ‘B’ Flight player was David Schenk with a net of 72.19. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Ben Moore with a net of 69.17.

Low ‘D’ Fight player was Ralph Brown with a net of 67.02. Low  gross was won by Petrea with a 72, and low net was won by Brown. O.J. Chandler, 88, shot an 88.

Mid. school baseball

Casey Gouge scattered five hits and hit a go-ahead homer to lead West Rowan to a 4-3 win against Erwin.

  Jake Blevins was able to escape a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to save it for the Bulldogs (2-1).

Catawba tennis

CHARLOTTE — The Catawba tennis teams fell to nationally-ranked Queens on Tuesday in South Atlantic Conference tennis action at the Queens Sports Complex. The Queens men, ranked 28th, won 8-1 to improve to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. Queens’ women are ranked 38th and moved to 9-1 and 5-0 after a 9-0 victory.

SALISBURYCatawba split men’s and women’s South Atlantic Conference tennis matches with visiting Anderson at the Johnson Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon. Catawba’s men rallied to knock off the 23rd-ranked Trojans 5-4, while the Anderson women claimed a 7-2 victory. The Catawba Indian men improve to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in the SAC with Anderson falling to 11-5 and 5-2. The Trojan women moved to 8-7 and 4-3 with Catawba falling to 3-9 and 0-6.

Adam Rocko battled back from down 4-2 in the third set to secure the winning point for the men at #6 singles. Luca Picci claimed a key win at #1 singles as he rallied from a set down to win, while Ryen Reid took the other singles point. The Indians had won two of three doubles to position themselves for the upset.

Catawba’s women played without top player Erisa Onchi, who injured an ankle on Tuesday against Queens. After losing three doubles matches, the Lady Indians got wins at the top two singles flights. Sophie Hirsch led 4-1 before her opponent defaulted, while Olivia Wooldridge came back from a set down to win a third set super tiebreaker.

The tennis teams are back in action on Thursday, traveling to Carson-Newman for 1 pm matches.

Catawba lacrosse

HARTSVILLE, S.C. — Catawba pulled away in the second half to post a 21-13 win over host Coker in South Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at the Coker Athletic Field. The Catawba Indians stay unbeaten in league play, moving to 8-5 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 1-7, 0-2.

Leading 8-7 at the break. Catawba got goals from Nicole Hunt and Brooklyn Tilley to go up 10-7 and grab its largest lead to that point. Katie Barth scored two of her four goals in just over a minute to push the margin to 14-10 with 14:41 remaining. The Lady Indians put the game away during a six-minute span when they scored four unanswered goals for an 18-11 lead with 6:44 left.

Catawba scored the opening two goals of the game, but Coker rallied behind Faith Kent and Haley McCusker to go up 6-4 of the 7:41 mark of the first half. Kent scored the first three goals with McCusker running off three straight after Tilley had put Catawba up 4-3. Catawba retook the lead on goals from Kennadi Holt, Barth and Becky Frost and would not trail again.

The Lady Indians held a big edge in shots with a 57-37 advantage, but Cassie Williams made 18 saves for the Cobras. Catawba won the battle of free-position shots, scoring on eight of 13 attempts, while Coker went 4-of-13.

Erin Green totaled seven points in the game for Catawba with four goals and three assists. Barth had her four goals with Hunt scoring three and helping on two. Tilley also tallied three goals. Hannah Scott and Imani Grays each caused four turnovers with Scott grabbing seven ground balls.

Kent recorded six goals with an assist for Coker. McCusker followed with five goals. Kent caused four turnovers and won 13 draw controls.

Catawba returns home to Shuford Stadium on Saturday, hosting Mars Hill at noon.

College footall

Wingate, N.C.—-Wingate University vice-president and director of athletics Steve Poston and head football coach Joe Reich announced the 2018 Wingate football schedule.

The Bulldogs will play  seven home games, beginning with a Thursday, Aug. 30, contest versus local rival Johnson C. Smith at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field (7 p.m. start time).

College golf

WALLACE — Catawba wrapped up an eighth-place finish on Tuesday at the Sunoco Campbell Oil Women’s Golf Tournament on Monday. The two-day, three-round tournament was hosted by UNC Pembroke at the 5,812-yard, par-72 River Landing Golf Club.

UNC Pembroke’s Alexandria Bare (South Rowan) shot 76-78-77 — 231 and finished 10th.

Lenoir-Rhyne secured its win with a final round 297 to post an 11-shot win over UNC Pembroke. LR recorded a three-round total of 918. Catawba had its best round on Tuesday with a final-round 316 to post a 975 total.

Kaley Barts finished in 19th with a total of 238. She closed with a 78 on Tuesday. Also shooting 78s in the final round for Catawba was Madison Moore and Jaime Cassell.

Diana McDonald, of Wingate, rallied with a two-under-par 70 in the final round to force a playoff with Lenoir-Rhyne’s Ainee O’Connor. McDonald birdied the first playoff hole to take medalist honors. Lise Malherbe, of Lincoln Memorial, was three shots back in third.

The tournament was the final tune-up before Catawba competes in the South Atlantic Conference Championships from April 15-17 at the Woodcreek Country Club in Elgin, S.C.
