Attention Crosby Scholar juniors

Rowan County Crosby Scholars will be holding its final Rising Senior meetings for its class of 2019 in the Hemann Room, located at 225 N. Main Street, behind the Crosby Scholars offices on Saturday, April 14 at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

All Crosby Scholar juniors are required to attend one of these meetings, and parents are encouraged to attend, as well. During the meeting, an overview of the Crosby Scholars’ senior program will be given including information on college access, expectations of seniors, and benefits of the Crosby Scholars program.

Crosby Scholars senior advisors needed

This June, with three graduating classes under its belt, the Crosby Scholars program will have assisted 500 students from across Rowan County with their post-secondary plans. Each of these seniors worked with a trained advisor, receiving assistance with college applications, essay review, FAFSA completion and overall coordination of the college access process. For the 2017-18 academic year, the Crosby office trained over 50 volunteers to work with its seniors. 

Mentors meet with their assigned students beginning in the summer before the senior year. They continue to meet monthly with their seniors, assisting with the total college application process and plans for after high school. The Crosby Scholars program relies on volunteers to serve in this capacity, and this year will have close to 150 students who will need to be paired with a trained mentor.

If you have a passion for the youth in Rowan County and would like to assist seniors with their plans to go to college, please contact the Crosby Scholars office. All volunteers who work with students undergo Crosby Scholars training and background checks through the Rowan-Salisbury School system. The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Clubs of Davidson County and Buffalo Wild Wings, located at 1519 E Innes St in Salisbury, are teaming up to make an impact in the lives of many community youth. Buffalo Wild Wings will host a Community Day on April 18 and will donate 10 percent of its total sales that day, plus any additional guest donations, to the clubs as part of the Buffalo Wild Wings Team Up for Kids® initiative. 

This partnership has also helped many Boys and Girls Clubs buy new sports equipment and uniforms, thus helping club staff to promote programs that contribute to an active and healthy lifestyle for the youth that they serve. For this event, dining customers will be treated to a special performance from the club’s cheerleader squad. Other club kids will serve as greeters to the customers as they come in the door.
