Area students compete in Music Festival
Area piano and vocal students recently performed memorized music pieces in the North Carolina Festival of Music Clubs representing The Salisbury Music Club. This judged event was held Saturday March 17 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Salisbury.
The National Federation of Music Club Festivals is designed to promote study, stimulate interest in American and world music literature, and encourage each participant to reach a high standard of musical achievement.
The piano students of Deanna Smith who received a superior rating in piano solo were: Debbie Beaver, Jessica Beaver, Caleb Baker, Zoey Waters, Daleiah Waters, Lucas Weeder, Emma Weeder, Keira Turney, Anna Kimmins, Laura Kimmins, Davis Brown, Keith Goins, and Ayla Turney.
The piano students of Jan Sywenki who received a superior rating in piano solo were: Caleigh Morgan, Stella Smeltzer and Jude Smeltzer. Those students who received a superior in hymn playing were: Stella Smeltzer and Jude Smeltzer.
The piano students of Diane Freeman who received a superior rating in piano solo were: John Bristol, Michael Bristol, Benjamyn Hogan, Colin Misenheimer, Olivia Smith, Tom Bristol, James Bristol, Bethany Hogan, Jadyn Safrit, Reagan Carpenter, and Kylie Creel. Those students who received a superior rating in hymn playing were: Benjamyn Hogan, Colin Misenheimer, Olivia Smith, Bethany Hogan, and Jadyn Safrit.
The vocal students of Diane Freeman who received a superior rating in vocal solo were: Emilee Hinson, Celia Sifford, Anna Lynne Marino, Victoria Parker, Reagan Carpenter, Kylie Creel, and Cheyenne Talley.
Angela Robbins and Dustin Shelton were the judges for this event.

The Rowan Genealogical Society
The Rowan Genealogical Society will have its April meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Rowan Public Library. All interested in learning about family research and genealogy are welcome. Guest speaker this month is Steve Simpson, describing his family research of his Kentucky roots. Bob Bruce is president of the Rowan Genealogical Society.

Breast cancer awareness Poker Run
CHINA GROVE — On Saturday, April 21 is the inaugural Breast cancer awareness Poker Run, beginning at and sponsored by the Lucky Turnaround, raising money to pay for mammograms for people of the community that have no insurance coverage.
Registration is 11 a.m. at the Lucky Turnaround, 1560 US-29; early registration now in progress.
Cost is $15 single / $20 double; kickstands up 12:30 p.m.
There will be raffles, auctions and food and a luminary ceremony 5 p.m.
The poker run stops at LTA, VFW Kannapolis, AmVEts Rockewell, Hart Post 14 salisbury, Kennedy Hall, and returns return to the LTA.

Fourth annual Flip Flops and Flamingos
Save the date: The Fourth Annual Families First-NC Inc. Flip Flops and Flamingos fundraising event is Sunday April 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the F & M Trolley Barn at 125 E. Liberty St.
There will be live music by Lonnie Carpenter and Top Shelf, a silent auction, food and drinks, and a cash bar.

Foundations of Faith community nursing course

Southern Piedmont Woodturners

CONCORD — “Turning with a Twist”  Club member Jack Reyome will demonstrate a process for making a goblet with a “twist” to the stem.  Jack will show how to use woods of contrasting colors to create a stem with a special style and a beautiful result, which can be a gift for a special occasion or an intriguing item to sell.  This project is one for an experienced turner who has not tried gluing up pieces of wood to achieve a spectacular result or for the less experienced turner who is looking to expand their skills with a project of proven attractiveness.

Southern Piedmont Woodturners meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm at their studio at 223 Crowell St. NW at the intersection with Kerr St.  Members begin gathering at 5:30 pm for fellowship and sharing.  The meeting normally ends by 9 p.m.  Everyone is welcome, anyone with no experience with turning to professional turners.  We can all learn from each other and enjoy this wonderful experience.

Over the next year we are planning several teaching/workshop sessions to teach a wide array of turning skills from how to select the wood to make a particular object, to how to sharpen tools, to make particular cuts to achieve a special effect and how to apply finishes to get the final look that makes the piece especially attractive.
