CHINA GROVE — South Rowan starter Zach Powers made it a closer game than expected, but Carson beat the Raiders, 4-0, on Wednesday in a non-conference game.

Powers pitched a complete game, striking out six.

But South (6-11) couldn’t get anything done offensively against three Carson pitchers.

Cameron Prugh pitched three strong innings, while Maddux Holshouser (4-1) and Luke Barringer hurled two apiece. They combined for two strikeouts.

Barringer hit a homer in the second inning to put Carson (13-4) in front.

The Cougars didn’t score again until Brycen Holshouser smacked a two-run triple in the fifth.

Carson got its final run in the sixth on a balk.

Carson has won 12 of its last 13 games.

South is at home against Lexington on Friday, while Carson hosts North Iredell.

GRANITE QUARRY —  East Rowan beat the Charlote Stampede, 12-2, in five innings on Wednesday.

Wayne Mize had three hits, including two home runs, and drove in five.

Hayden Setzer had a triple and two doubles and drove in four runs.

J.D. Basinger pitched four innings, struck out five and allowed one earned run. Jake Davis finished off the win.

Trevor Scruggs and Corbin Moss also had two hits on a big offensive night for the Mustangs (12-4).

East has won six in a row and goes to West Rowan on Friday.

SPENCER — North Rowan jumped ahead early and rolled to a 9-4 Yadkin Valley Conference win against West Montgomery on Wednesday.

North (5-10, 5-7) got strong pitching from Jordan Goodine.

Brett Tucker went 4-for-4 with a triple and a double.  McGwire Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Kobe Dupree had two hits and drove in a run.

  

Prep softball

ALBEMARLE — North Rowan won against Albemarle, 14-2, in Yadkin Valley Conference action on Wednesday.

Anna Everhart and Natavia Taborn had two hits each. Aubree Cain homered.

LANDIS — Whitley Arnott led South Rowan to a 13-1 Central Carolina Conference win against Oak Grove on Wednesday.

Arnott pitched a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts.  She also had a big night at the plate with a homer and five RBIs.

Arnott and Mataya Reynolds had two hits for the Raiders (12-7, 10-4).

LEXINGTON — Central Davidson scored 12 runs in the second inning and beat Salisbury, 15-0, in a CCC game on Wednesday.

Ellen Yang had a double for the Hornets. Journie Dawson and Shay Polk also had hits.

East Rowan rallied in the fifth inning with four runs and beat Wheatmore, 6-3.

Sydney Hendren drove in three runs as Davie County outscored East Surry, 11-8, on Wednesday.

WELCOME — South Rowan continued its strong season with a 3-1 Central Carolina Conference win at North Davidson on Wednesday.

Madison Henry scored all three goals, with Katelyn Goodman providing three assists for the Raiders (11-3, 10-2).

Michelle Rivera was outstanding in goal.

CHINA GROVE — Hannah Smith scored four goals to lead Carson to a 9-0 North Piedmont Conference win against West Rowan on Wednesday.

Gracie Thomason had a hat trick and Sarah Musselwhite and Emelyn Sotelo had a goal each.

Thomason, Musselwhite and Lani Isley had two assists each. Sotelo, Smith and Taylor Conrad had one each.

Montana Gurganious and Maren Shumaker combined on the shutout in goal.

Carson (8-2, 4-0)  led 6-0 at the break.

STATESVILLE — East Rowan won against Statesville, 2-1, on Wednesday in the NPC with Lauren Weisensel making 10 saves.

Alexis Avalos and Elizabth Avalos scored goals for the Mustangs (4-6, 1-3).

Weinsensel has 818 career saves. That figure  ranks third all-time in the state, according to the NCHSAA.

Prep boys tennis

CHINA GROVE — Carson won against North Iredell, 6-3, in North Piedmont Conference action on Wednesday.

Lucas Sides, Hunter Smith, Jacob Horner, Dylan Owens and Cameron Dunn won in singles for the Cougars.

Sides/Smith won in doubles.

Prep boys golf

STATESVILLE — In Wednesday’s North Piedmont Conference match at  Larkin Golf Club, East Rowan won again.

Bryson Sprinkle shot 36 to lead the Mustangs. Colby Patterson shot 40, Alex Miller 41, and Austin Miller 42.

Carson’s Zain Tucker and West Rowan’s Davis Tadlock shot 36s to share medalist honors with Sprinkle.

College football

Livingstone College will hold its intrasquad Black and White, spring football game this Friday at 7 p.m., in Alumni Memorial Stadium.

The scrimmage of Blue Bears is open to the public and admission is free.

Livingstone, which went 0-10 overall and 0-7 in the CIAA last year, looks to turn things around this season.

Former North Rowan star Alexis Archie has transferred to Livingstone from Feather River College (California) and is expected to battle for the Blue Bears’ quarterback job.

The Blue Bears kick off the 2018 season on the road on Aug. 30, when they visit Pikeville (Ky.) for a Thursday night (7:00) kickoff.  It will be the first time that Livingstone and Pikeville, a member of the Mid-South Conference, have met on the gridiron.

College track and field

Livingstone   participated in the JCSU Invitational at the Irwin Belk Complex   this past weekend.

The men were highlighted by sophomore Aaron Thompson, who ran two personal bests, 1:57.42 in the 800 and 49.41 in the 400.

Raymond Mcguire had a PR of 15.17  in the 110 hurdles.  Freshman Jameon Johnson had a personal best in the javelin (36.86 meters).

On the women’s side, sophomore Angel Ewell was the individual winner for the Blue Bears with a personal best 18:21.60 in the 5000 meters.

Also competing well for the Lady Blue Bears were freshman Khai Harris, who ran a season’s best 17.62 in the 100 hurdles in the prelims and 18.14 in the finals to finish fifth overall.

  The Blue Bears travel next to Greensboro  to compete in the Aggie Invitational on April 13-14.
