– Spider-Man steps down
E.Z. Smith, 55, who has coached Concord’s football teams since he was hired on Feb. 28, 1980, stepped down Saturday after a fantastic run.
An outstanding athlete in his playing days for the Spiders, Smith was All-State in football and baseball and All-SPC in basketball in 1971-72 before heading to South Carolina.
He coached in Florida four years before he was hired by his alma mater to replace W.A. Cline. The rest is history. Among other things, Smith went 26-0 against East Rowan, and he held his own against A.L. Brown.
Smith’s record at Concord was 254-100-1. He had two losing seasons in 29 years รณ 1987 and 2008. In the recent campaign, Concord was 3-7.

Alex Franklin (15), Conor Honeycutt (11) and Celexus Long (10) scored in double figures as Davidson Country Day’s varsity boys defeated Sacred Heart 47-45 in overtime. Tim Burges had eight rebounds for the Diamondbacks (12-10).
Eric Edwards (14), Brian Bauk (13) and Michael Strobel (10) scored in double figures for the Dolphins.
