Area Sports Briefs: South, North, Carson get baseball wins

LANDIS — South Rowan used strong pitching and timely hits to beat Central Davidson, 3-2, in Central Carolina Conference baseball on Wednesday.
Zach Powers threw six strong innings for the Raiders (8-11, 7-8) for the win, while Matt Donahue pitched the seventh for a save.
Kory Moss had a two-out RBI double. Garrett had a two-out, run-scoring single. Jarrid Nelson hit a sac fly.
South hosts West Rowan in a non-conference game tonight.

MOUNT GILEAD — Strong pitching by Jordan Goodine keyed North Rowan’s 7-4 Yadkin Valley Conference win at West Montgomery on Wednesday.
Goodine pitched into the seventh inning for North (7-12, 7-8), and Chase Shoaf finished.
Shoaf and McGwire Smith had two hits each. Will Anthony stayed hot with two RBIs.

CONCORD— Luke Barringer’s three-run homer in the first inning propelled Carson to a 12-5 non-conference win at Cox Mill on Wednesday.
Carson (16-5) got five shutout innings with seven strikeouts from winner Maddux Holshouser (6-1), and the bullpen was able to finish things off.
Barringer had three hits and five RBIs. Cameron Prugh had two hits and scored three runs. Owen White had two hits and three RBIs.
Chandler Riley had a triple for the Chargers and drove in two runs.

Quin Ferguson homered as Mooresville beat Davie County on Wednesday, 5-2.

Marshall Raper drove in five runs as Robinson clobbered Hopewell on Wednesday, 13-3.
The Bulldogs are 14-4.

Prep softball
MOUNT ULLA — Taylor Walton drove in four runs with two hits, as West Rowan beat Concord, 10-0, on Wednesday in non-conference play.
Parker Greene had two hits, including a homer, for the Falcons (14-4). Alexandra Linder had a double and drove in a run.
Hannah Roberts pitched the five-inning shutout and struck out five.
Cailtyn Gable and Caroline Ferrel had two hits for the Spiders.
West has won nine of its last 10 games and hosts North Iredell on Friday.

CHINA GROVE — Carson pounded 15 hits and rolled to an 11-1 win against South Rowan in Wednesday’s non-conference game.
The Cougars (11-6) got good pitching from Rylie Stewart. She struck out nine.
Katie Jewell homered and drove in four runs for the Cougars. Kary Hales had three hits and drove in two. Liza Simmerson had two hits and knocked in two. Jewell, Stewart and Skyler Smith had two hits each.
For South (13-8), Summer McKeon homered and Mataya Reynolds and Jalee Rollins had two hits each.

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan lost to Central Cabarrus, 16-0, in a non-conference game on Wednesday.
Riley Tucker hit two homers for the Vikings, and Jordan Baker and Destiny Thornton had one each.

MOCKSVILLE — Sydney Snyder had three hits as North Davidson beat Davie County, 6-4, in non-conference action on Wednesday.
Sydney Wyatt homered and drove in two runs for the War Eagles.
Prep tennis
Salisbury closed the Central Carolina Conference regular season with a 9-0 win against South Rowan.
The Hornets are 18-0, while South is 6-12.
Prep soccer
WINSTON-SALEM — Salisbury’s girls took another step toward the Central Carolina Conference championship on Wednesday by beating Oak Grove, 5-0.
Salisbury owns a three-game lead over South Rowan and West Davidson with four games left.
Julia Honeycutt scored two goals for the Hornets, while Freya Obermueller, Caroline Cardelle and Piper Muire had one each.
Assists were credited to Obermueller, Elle Kennedy, Lillie Rusher and Ellen Simons. Emily Mann and Cardelle combined for the shutout in goal.
Salisbury hosts Ledford on Monday at 6 p.m.

Karigan Ford scored the only goal for short-handed South Rowan in Wednesday’s 4-1 CCC loss to West Davidson. South was missing four players.

Lauren Weisensel made four saves as East Rowan topped West Rowan, 1-0, in North Piedmont Conference play on Wednesday.

Local golf
Andre Resner had a hole-in-one recently at the Country Club of Salisbury.
Resner aced No. 9, at 161 yards, with a 7-iron. The feat was witnessed by Wally Eidson, Brian Kennerly and Alan Fesperman.
College baseball
A three-run bottom of the eighth propelled the Elon baseball team to a 5-4 victory over the North Carolina A&T Aggies. Phoenix skipper Mike Kennedy earned the 700th win of his career on Wednesday.
Intimidators
On the final game of their seven-game road trip, the Kannapolis Intimidators fell to Augusta, 5-1, in a Wednesday matinee.
The Intimidators (7-6) are home tonight vs. Greenville.
Mid. school baseball
West Rowan defeated Corriher Lipe on Tuesday and Wednesday to improve to 6-2.
Justin Cole and Casey Gouge were the winning pitchers. Jake Blevins and Blake Oliphant led the Bulldogs at the plate. West plays Knox on Thursday.
