Area sports briefs: Catawba women vs. Carson-Newman

Freshman Dana Hicks beat the buzzer with a layup in overtime to give Catawba a 77-75 victory over Carson-Newman in SAC women’s basketball on Wednesday.
Nisha Long made the pass to Hicks. Long had missed a shot inside, but Brooke Whitley battled for the rebound and tipped it back to Long, who drove the lane and fed a wide- open Hicks as time expired.
Catawba (12-7, 4-4) trailed by five points in overtime, but a jumper by Hicks and a 3-pointer by Whitley brought the Indians back.
Whitley’s 3-pointer with 26 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime.
Cameron Clark hit four 3s and scored a career-high 22 points and had eight rebounds. Whitley had 14 of her 16 points in the second half. Hicks had 17 points and eight boards.
Shari Buford had 16 points and 13 rebounds for Carson-Newman. (14-5, 5-3).

– Catawba men postponed
Catawba’s men’s basketball game with Carson-Newman was postponed due to a leak at Goodman Gym.
The game will be rescheduled.
– 8th-grade tournament
Ashley Poole’s North Rowan girls and J.R. Black’s North Rowan boys won middle school tournament championships at Knox on Wednesday.
North’s top-seeded girls beat West Rowan 40-30. Taylor Sells, Amber Carter and Onesha Stevenson had nine points each for the Mavericks (13-1). Nikhyia Polk had seven points and Daterria Connor six.
Kym Caldwell had 10 points and sparked the second-seeded Bulldogs (11-4) to an early lead. Tabitha Ball had nine points and Shay Steele six.
* North’s top-seeded boys beat sixth-seeded Knox 57-41.
T.J. Bates had 10 of his 16 points in the first half for the Mavs (14-0) and added six rebounds.
Malik Ford had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and T.J. Allen had 12 points and 12 boards as North controlled the glass. Desmond Jackson added seven points.
Samron “Buster’ Hillie scored 14 points for Knox. Keion Adams had eight points, while Kiero Cuthbertson had eight points and 11 boards for the Trojans (6-9).
– SAC baseball
Twenty-second ranked Tusculum received six first-place votes and was named the favorite to win the SAC baseball championship in a poll of league coaches.
Catawba received the other three first-place votes and was second in the voting.
Catawba’s first-team preseason All-SAC selections are pitchers Blake Ketner (NW Cabarrus) and Tim Holmes, shortstop Chris Ahearn, third baseman Craige Lyerly (East Rowan), DH Brett Hatley (West Rowan).
Second-team picks were catcher Ryan Query (A.L. Brown) and pitcher Alex Fairweather.
Rounding out the preseason voting were Carson-Newman, Wingate, Lenoir-Rhyne, Newberry, Lincoln Memorial, Mars Hill and Brevard.
Lenoir-Rhyne first baseman Zach Glass (Salisbury) was a second-team pick.
– CCC swim meet
Salisbury’s girls finished second to West Davidson in Tuesday’s CCC swim meet.
Salisbury’s Garrison Stevens won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
Stevens, Madi Ralston, Shelby Carrion and Carley Drye won the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.
Ralston was second in the 100 butterfly.
Drye, Ralston, Katie Canipe and Molly Robinson took second in the 200 free relay.
North’s girls finished sixth, Katie Doby’s fifth in the 100 breast led the Cavaliers.
* West Davidson also won the boys meet.
Salisbury was fourth. Salisbury’s Andrew McCollister won the 100 breast and took second in the 200 individual medley.
North’s boys finished eighth. Dusty Agner had a third and a fourth.

– NPC swim meet
Lake Norman won the NPC boys swim meet held Tuesday at Hurley YMCA.
Northwest Cabarrus was second. East Rowan was third, South Rowan fourth, West Rowan ninth and Carson 10th.
East’s Tanner Lowman won the 100 breaststroke and was second in the 200 free.
East’s 200 relay team of Lowman, Sam McSwain, Will Stokes and Scott Clark placed second.
South’s Trevor Guyaux was third in the 50 free.
* Lake Norman and Northwest Cabarrus also placed 1-2 in the girls meet.
East was third, with South fifth and Carson ninth.

– Livingstone hoops
Livingstone swept a CIAA doubleheader from St. Paul’s Tuesday. The LC men won 81-78, while the LC women pulled out a 73-69 decision.
– College basketball
Wesley Honeycutt (South Rowan) scored 13 points for Davidson County Community College in a 77-75 loss to Guilford’s jayvees on Monday.
* Coker’s Michael Gore (South) scored six points in a 75-69 loss against Limestone on Tuesday.
– Women’s basketball
Saybah Sammy (Salisbury) had three points and four rebounds for Fayetteville State in a 74-54 win against Lincoln on Monday.
* South Carolina State’s Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) had 12 points and three assists in a 90-61 MEAC loss to N.C. A&T on Monday.
* Brittany Cornelius (East Rowan) had 10 points and four assists for Meredith in a 58-52 loss against Averett on Tuesday.
– Jayvee basketball
Carson’s boys topped Statesville 54-38.
Dylan Eagle had 11 points for the Cougars (4-10). Cliff Long scored 10, and Zack Wagner contributed eight points and four assists.
Jared Raper and Kyle Bridges played solid defense and rebounded well for the Cougars.
* East Rowan’s girls defeated Statesville 36-24.
Ashley Goins shot 4-for-5 from the floor and led the Mustangs with 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Summer Taylor added six points for East.
* West Rowan’s girls lost to Mooresville 56-39.
Brittney Barber scored 21 points for the Falcons, while Allison Dutton had 12.
* West Rowan’s boys lost to Mooresville 52-45. Kajuan Phillips led the Falcons with 10 points.
Isaiah Cuthbertson had nine, Kevin Turner seven and Maurice Warren five.
* Salisbury’s girls lost their first game of the season to East Davidson 45-44.
Ayana Hicks led the Hornets (11-1, 6-1) with 18 points. Najwa Allison added 14.
* Salisbury’s boys (10-3, 6-2) beat East Davidson 70-48 behind 22 points from tion McCain. Dejoun Jones added 16 and Dominique Dismuke scored 10.
– Salisbury freshmen
Salisbury’s undefeated freshmen boys basketball team won 57-34 at East Davidson on Tuesday. Salisbury limited the Golden Eagles to 12 points in the first half.
Kavari Hillie led the Hornets with 24 points and 15 rebounds.
Salisbury’s Justin Ferguson scored 16 points and 12 boards.
Defensive standouts for the Hornets included Sam Humble, who controlled the paint for Salisbury.
– Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s girls topped Statesville Christian 23-17.
Kelly Dulkoski had 16 points and five steals for the Dolphins (20-3). Laney Gokey had 10 rebounds, and Jordan Pring contributed five steals.
– Stallions hoops
The Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool Stallions boys varsity beat Grace Academy 56-45.
Point guard Caleb Dietz scored 10 points and helped the Stallions (10-9) take care of the ball. They had a season-low eight turnovers.
Christian Hicks scored 15 points, while his brother K.P. had 13. Tim Coleman added nine points.
* Hannah Holm scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool Stallion girls to a 43-24 win over Grace Academy.
Ruth Ann Thomas dished out seven assists for the Stallions (11-4).
– Kannapolis Komets
The Kannapolis Komets will hold a tryout for a 13- under girls basketball team this Sunday from 2:30-4 p.m. at Kannapolis Middle School.
