CINCINNATI ó Wake Forest and Xavier have agreed to a 10-year series that will be called the Skip Prosser Classic to honor their former coach.
The first game will be played next season at Wake Forest. The schools will split home-court advantage during the series.
Prosser was Wake Forest’s coach when he died of an apparent heart attack in 2007 at age 56.
He was buried in Cincinnati, where he maintained a home. Prosser was at Xavier from 1985-2001, the last seven as head coach.
N.C. STATE
RALEIGH ó A mural painted in N.C. State’s Free Expression Tunnel to honor women’s basketball coach Kay Yow has been restored after it was defaced.
Yow died Jan. 24 after a long struggle with breast cancer.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that Saturday a blue mustache was painted on the portrait along with phrase, “cancer rules.” The graffiti was removed and the mural restored by early Sunday morning.
No one has claimed responsibility, and it was unclear if campus police will investigate.
ACC HONORS
GREENSBORO ó Clemson’s K.C. Rivers and Georgia Tech’s Gani Lawal are co-players of the week in the ACC, while Wake Forest’s Al-Farouq Aminu has been selected rookie of the week.
Rivers had 29 points in the Tigers’ win at Virginia Tech. Lawal scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in leading the Yellow Jackets over Wake Forest.
Aminu won the rookie award for the fourth time. He posted back-to-back double-doubles and averaged 16 points, 10.5 rebounds and three steals as Wake beat Duke and lost to Georgia Tech.
GEORGIA
ATLANTA ó Bob Knight would consider returning to the sideline if the right coaching opportunity presented itself.
“It has to be one, from my standpoint, where I think we would have the wherewithal to recruit and be able to compete with anybody,” Knight told ESPN Radio.
His name has been linked to Georgia, but he said he’s had no contact. Athletic director Damon Evans is heading the search and ultimately will make a recommendation to president Michael Adams.
Adams’ friendship with NCAA president Myles Brand, who fired Knight at Indiana, could become a factor.
MISSISSIPPI
CINCINNATI ó A newly released police video shows Mississippi coach Andy Kennedy pleading with an officer before his arrest on an assault charge.
“I’m begging you … this is a major deal, man,” Kennedy told police.
He added: “This is going to be a national incident, sir.”
Kennedy was arrested in downtown Cincinnati on Dec. 18 after a taxi driver said Kennedy hit him and used racial slurs. On the video broadcast by WLWT-TV in Cincinnati, an officer warned Kennedy to do what police say.
“You turn on me one more time, I’m going to start making some more charges. Do you understand me?” an unidentified police officer told Kennedy.
Kennedy told police on the video that he had a verbal altercation about how many people could ride in the cab, and that it “makes no sense” to arrest him.
In response to his pleas, an officer said: “You think we’ve never arrested somebody that’s made national media? … We deal with the Bengals all the time.”
