Soldiers Memorial holds Livingstone College Founders Day service

The Rev. Dr. Grant Harrison Jr. and members of Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church invite the community to share in its annual Livingstone College Founders Day service, Sunday at 11 a.m.
A special invitation is extended to Livingstone College faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends. Harrison will speak on the occasion of this observance. He was the first graduate of the doctor of ministry program at Hood Seminary and he holds many positions in the Western North Carolina Annual Conference of the AME. Zion Church and is proudest to serve as pastor at Soldiers Memorial in Salisbury.Financial gifts will be donated to the United Negro College Fund and the Livingstone College Concert Choir. Music will be provided by the Livingstone choir, under the direction of DeVaughn Miller, accompanied by Joanne Harrison, director of music at Soldiers Memorial.
Following the morning worship, a meal will be served in the fellowship hall.

Jerusalem Baptist
SPENCER ó The Pastor’s Aide Society of Jerusalem Baptist Church will sponsor their annual “Pack The Pews” Day this Sunday during the 11 a.m. service.
This celebration is set aside as a time for friends and family” to worship together. The program will include music by Jerusalem’s all male choir under the direction of Minister of Music Keith Holland, Praise Team Dancers with leader Connie O’Kelly and words of Inspiration by Linda Stoner.
Special recognition will be given to the Scholarship Golfers who participated in Jerusalem’s Scholarship Golf Tournament.

Deacons Alliance
The Rowan and Davie County Deacons Alliance Inc.will be celebrating their 19th anniversary and revival services Feb. 8-13.
This Sunday at 4 p.m., the revival will begin at Jerusalem Baptist Church. The Rev. David L. Bracken is the host pastor and the Rev. Alonza Williams, pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church will be the speaker. He will be accompanied by his choir and congregation.
All remaining services will be held Monday through Friday at New Zion Baptist Church, Dunns Mountain Road. Pastor Paul Jones Sr. is the host pastor. Services will begin at 7 p.m. All speakers will be accompanied by their choir, congregation and ushers.

CHINA GROVE ó This Sunday during the 11 a.m. service, there will be a blessing of all the married couples. Following the service a free lunch will be served in the fellowship hall. The public is welcome.On Wednesday evening, Feb. 11, in the 7 p.m. service, the Rev. Charlie Miller will be the visiting speaker. He is known for his unique preaching style, his expertise as a Bible teacher and his prayers for the sick.

First Presbyterian
First Presbyterian Church presents the Lewis Preaching Series, Feb, 22 and 23. This year’s guest speaker is Dr. Anna Carter Florence, from Columbia Theological Seminary. She will preach at all three services on Feb. 22 (sanctuary: 8:30 and 11 a.m. and Lewis Hall: 8:50 a.m.). Her topic will be the “Fight Before Dinner.”
On Sunday evening, Feb. 22, there will be a dinner and program. Dinner will be at 5:30 p.m. in Lewis Hall. The program will begin at 6 p.m., also in Lewis Hall. Dr. Carter Florence’s topic will be “The Story of Eutychus: Paul, Preaching and Bored-to-Death Youth.”
On Monday morning, Feb. 23, Florence will host a workshop at 10 a.m. in Lewis Hall. Her topic will be “Preaching as Testimony: Can I Really Say That?!”

St. John’s Lutheran
St. John’s Lutheran Church Boy Scouts will lead the service on Scout Sunday, Feb. 8. Scouts will serve as ushers, worship leaders and lectors. Four young men will be awarded the Eagle rank, the highest rank awarded in scouting: Michael Neely, Aaron Walser, Jay Caldwell and Christopher Cook.
Troop members assisted with their projects that included repair of cabins at St. John’s retreat property, a food drive for Rowan Helping Ministries, landscaping at Overton School, and set-up and removal of chairs at the Holiday Caravan parade.
Girl Scouts are having their annual cookie sale. Amy Ritchie is the cookie manager. Scouts will also have cookies available on Girl Scout Sunday, March 8, and the following Sunday before and after all three services.
St. John’s will host a Bible study based on the movie “Fireproof My Marriage” beginning this Sunday from 6-7 p.m. in room 218 of the education building, and will run for seven weeks.
The community is invited to St. John’s Lutheran for the Taize Service of Epiphany and Light which will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, in the Chapel. The Taize service is a quiet and intimate time of prayer, meditation and responsive singing.

Love Feast
LEXINGTON ó The United House of Prayer for All People, 815 Cotton Grove Road, Lexington, will hold a Love Feast dinner with entertainment at 6 p.m. Feb. 14. The cost is couples $40 and singles $25. The menu is steak and sauteed shrimp, baby carrots, french style green beans, dinner rolls, petit cakes and sparkling grape juice. Entertainment is light jazz with a special duet by R. and K. Widemen and praise dance by Mrs. A. Mixson and friend.

St. Paul’s Episcopal
The Rev. Henry Sink will return as guest celebrant for the 11 a.m. Holy Eucharist service Sunday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 930 S. Main St. in Salisbury.
All parishioners are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items which will be donated to Rowan Helping Ministries. The public is welcome to the service and a time of fellowship and refreshments in the Parish Hall.

Salem Lutheran
Salem Lutheran Church, 5080 Sherrills Ford Road, invites the community to worship on Sunday, Feb. 8 as they join with Cub and Boy Scouts across the nation who will be recognizing and honoring all Scouts on Scout Sunday. Salem has two services: 8:30 a.m. Salem Spirit Contemporary Service and 10:45 a.m. Traditional Service.
The Boy Scout Program began in America on Feb. 8, 1910 and continues to this day as a wonderful program that helps boys become leaders and young men of character.
The congregation will recognize and pray for its troop, Troop 414, and the boys and leaders who participate in scouting in the community.
At the 8:30 a.m. service, the Cub Pack of Troop 414 will present a skit that recalls how Scouting came to America from England.
William Boyce, an American traveling in England, learned about scouting when he became lost in London and needed help. A scout came to his aid and helped him find his way. Boyce asked if he could reward the scout. The scout said no, that he was only doing what scouts are supposed to do, that is, doing what scouts call a “good turn” or helping others.

Maranatha Bible Church will celebrate Creation Sunday Feb. 8 in all of its services.
Feb. 12 is the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his famous work “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life.”
Retired science teacher Jeff Warner will teach the joint Sunday School classes at 9 a.m. as he takes a critical and scientific look at creation and evolution. Warner has three degrees in meteorology, geography, earth and space sciences from UNC.Warner was voted “Teacher of the Year” three times, “Science Teacher for the Year” twice and “Outstanding State Science Educator” by the Charlotte chapter of Sigma Xi for 2002-2003.
At the 10 a.m. worship service, Pastor Bob Freitas will preach on Genesis 1. “Darwin or Jesus Christ, Where is your faith?”
This Sunday evening at 6 p.m. a documentary by scientist and professor Dr. A.E. Wilder Smith examining evolution will be presented.
