National Day of Prayer observances planned Thursday

SALISBURY — National Day of Prayer is an annual observance on the first Thursday of May and is an opportunity for people of all faiths to pray for the nation, their community and leaders.
The observance was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.
Several communities have scheduled National Day of Prayer observances:
• Salisbury Mayor Al Heggins will read a proclamation for National Day of Prayer at Salisbury Academy at 8:45 a.m, 2210 N. Jake Alexander Blvd.
• Salisbury District Christian Education Department observance, 6:30 p.m. at Moore’s Chapel AME Zion, 500 Partee St. In observance of LUPUS Awareness, participants are asked to wear purple.
• A Cannon Memorial YMCA observance will be held at the Speedway Club at Charlotte Motor Speedway, 5555 Concord Parkway S. in Concord. Doors open at 7:15 a.m.; the program begins at 8 a.m. The gathering includes breakfast, prayer, music and a message.
• South Rowan Ministerial Association at noon will feature music and prayers for the community and nation. The observance is in Hanna Park in downtown China Grove beside F&M Bank. In case of rain, it will move to First Baptist Church on Patterson Street.
• The town of East Spencer will host its observance at noon in front of Town Hall, 105 S. Long St. The speaker will be the Rev. Patrick Jones.
