The May primary for several local and federal offices will be held tomorrow from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. at precinct polling places throughout the county.

The day comes just three days after a 17-day window of early voting. It closed Saturday, with 3.49 percent of Rowan County’s 94,330 registered voters casting their ballots.

Of these, 31.44 percent were unaffiliated, 46.18 percent were Republicans, 0.03 percent were Libertarians and 22.35 percent were Democrats.

Nearly 88 percent of unaffiliated voters participated in the Republican primary, meaning 73.73 percent of early votes were Republican.

Partisan races on the ballot this year include Republican primaries for North Carolina’s Senate District 33, North Carolina House of Representatives District 83 and three seats on the Rowan County Board of Commissioners.

Carl Ford and Bill Sorenson are on the ballot for Senate District 33. Sorenson is an educator from Stanly County. Ford, who owns a broadcasting company, is currently a North Carolina House representative in District 76.

For North Carolina’s 83rd House District, newcomer and photographer Michael Anderson is challenging experienced state Rep. Larry Pittman, currently serving in the 82nd District.

In the county commission race, Craig Pierce, Michael Julian, and Jim Sides are challenging incumbents Greg Edds, Jim Greene and Judy Klusman.

Democratic primary races include U.S. House of Representatives District 8 and District 13 and North Carolina House District 83.

Candidates for U.S. House in District 8 are newcomers Scott Huffman, Frank McNeill and Marc Tiegel.

Adam Coker and Kathy Manning will face off for U.S. House District 13, and Senah Andrews, Earle Schecter and Gail Young for North Carolina House District 83.

A nonpartisan issue on the ballot is the city of Salisbury referendum: vote for or against the city leasing Fibrant broadband service to Hotwire Communications.

A nonpartisan election will also occur for the Kannapolis City School’s Board of Education in Area 1. Two seats will be on Tuesday’s ballot for Kannapolis residents.

Candidates are Kristina Tutterow Cook, Brenda McCombs, Jessica Dixon Touart, Janet E. Yvars and incumbent Daniel M. Wallace.
