Area Sports Briefs: Davie baseball ends season

ROCKINGHAM — Davie County’s baseball team played Tuesday in the first round of the 4A state playoffs and lost at Richmond County, 8-2.
Richmond pitcher Trey Watkins threw a complete game and catcher Gordon Pihl had three hits for the 15th-seeded Raiders (18-7).
Davie, seeded 18th in the 4A West bracket, ended the season with a 10-12 record.
Davie took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a run-scoring single by Hunter Bowles.
Justin Ingram’s two-run single in the bottom of the second put Richmond ahead to stay. Pihl had a two-run single in the sixth.
Garrett Chandler drove in a run for Davie in the seventh. Hite Merrifield had a double to lead off the game, but he was stranded.
Richmond plays Friday at East Forsyth, which had a first-round bye.
Playoffs
A.L. Brown’s softball team lost to Marvin Ridge, 3-1, on Tuesday.
Tonight will be a busy night for local teams in the first round of the state playoffs. See Scoreboard.
In baseball, East Rowan hosts Tuscola at 6, Carson hosts West Rowan at 7, and Salisbury is on the road at Bandys at 7.
In girls soccer, top-seeded Salisbury is home against Patton at 6, Carson is at A.C. Reynolds, South Rowan is at Forest Hills at 6, and A.L. Brown is at T.C. Roberson at 6:30.
In softball, Carson is home against Cramer at 7, West Rowan is home against A.C. Reynolds at 6, East Rowan is at Cox Mill at 6, and South Rowan is at East Rutherford at 6.
Davie softball has a first-round bye.
Prep tennis
Lexington, Shelby and Brevard advanced in the second round of the 2A West state tennis playoffs.
Shelby and Brevard are undefeated and will square off in the third round. Undefeated Salisbury plays Lexington in Round 3 on Monday.
Mid. school tennis
The North Rowan Middle boys ended their season with a 6-3 victory over China Grove.
Winning in singles for North Middle were Arizona Day, Ali Khatib, Noah Williams and Justin Henderson. Winning in doubles were Day/Antonio Cerritos and Khatib/Williams.
The Mavericks finished the season with a 5-3 record.
Marathon running
Former Salisbury High athlete Katelyn Storey completed the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., in 3 hours, 25 minutes and completed the Rock & Roll Marathon in 3 hours, 19 minutes, 27 seconds.
Storey has finished eight marathons.
College softball
The Pfeiffer softball team has earned the No. 1 seed in the ECAC Division III tournament .
The Falcons (35-5) will travel to Madison, N.J., to take on No. 8 seed Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham on Wednesday.

Four schools will represent the South Atlantic Conference in the Division II playoffs, which start at 16 regional sites on May 10-12.
Lenoir-Rhyne earned the No. 2 seed in the Southeast Region and will host. The Bears will take on No. 7 Young Harris in the opening round. Also traveling to Hickory, will be the No. 6 seed Carson-Newman. The Eagles will face No. 3 seed Georgia College.
Heading to Dahlonega, Ga., and No. 1 seed North Ga., will be No. 4 seed Coker. The Cobras will face No. 5 seed Queens in the opening round.
Region winners advance to super regionals on May 17-18.
Fishing
NEW HILL — Boater Robert Walser of Lexington caught a five-bass limit Saturday weighing 18 pounds, 11 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League North Carolina Division tournament on Jordan Lake. Walser was awarded $5,048.
Rotary Tennis
The 10th annual Rotary Championships will be held in Salisbury on May 25-27.
The entry deadline is May 21. Draws will be posted by: Thursday, May 24
Most matches will be played at Catawba, but City Park, Country Club of Salisbury and Salisbury High courts also may be used.

NCHSAA
The NCHSAA Board of Directors voted to increase the number of 1A playoff teams in volleyball, boys basketball and girls basketball from 48 to 64.
The new rule will take effect this fall.
Local golf
Johnny Shook made a hole-in-one at Rolling Hills. Shook aced the 140-yard No. 10 hole. Beaver Hammond and Westley Keller witnessed the shot.

Fifty-five GARS members played a Four-Person Quota Tournament and an ABCD Tournament at Corbin Hills.
The winning team with a +25 consisted of Ernest Wagner, Lynn Shook, Bill Saunders, and Frank Masingo. The second-place team with a +24 were Larry Luther, Steve Kale, Mike Sides, and Lou Manning.
Two teams tied for third place at +18. The team of Ray Pope, Tom Talbert, Tommy Seamon and Andy Griffin won the scorecard playoff over the team of Larry Petrea, Johnny Graham, Max Eller and Rick Fior.
‘A’ Flight winner was Gordon Correll with a net of 67.75. ‘B’ flight winner was Allen Hammill with a net of 64.37. ‘ C’ Flight winner was Mike Sides with a net of 60.60. ‘D’ Flight winner was Griffin with a net of 58.22.
Closest to the pin on No. 2 was won by Manning. Longest putt on No. 9 was made by Griffin. Edgar Osborne and Correll tied for low gross with 77s. Low net was won by Griffin. Manning 84, shot an 84. O.J. Chandler, 88, shot an 84. J.C. Ritchie, 93, shot an 87.

Bryan Duncan made a hole-in-one at Rolling Hills.
He aced the 158-yard No. 10 hole with a 9-iron.
Bryce Corbett, Blake Jordan and Dakota Tilley witnessed the feat.
Rowan Mountaineers
The Rowan Mountaineers Youth Tackle Football Program is offering free non-contact workouts for any boy or girl , ages 4-10, interested in playing competitive tackle football.
Workouts will be held every Saturday in the Month of May from 1-2 p.m. at Mountaineer Field (2400 Faith Road, Salisbury).

Richmond’s Jerry Sands (Catawba) hit his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot, in Tuesday’s 6-5 loss to Akron.

Craig Brooks (Catawba) had a great outing on Tuesday, throwing two scoreless innings with five strikeouts as Tennessee beat Jacksonville.
Brooks (2-0) pitched the eighth and ninth innings and was credited with the win when the Smokies scored the deciding run in the 10th.
Echols Award
Wingate University won it’s 12th consecutiive South Atlantic Conference Echols Athletic Excellence Award.
Wingate won the conference championship in men’s soccer, football, men’s tennis, women’s golf and women’s outdoor track and field.
The Bulldogs posted second-place finishes in men’s cross country, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s outdoor track and field and baseball.
Queens University of Charlotte placed second in the standings. The Royals took home conference titles in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s tennis, and men’s outdoor track and field.
Lenoir-Rhyne University came in at No. 3, as it took home SAC titles in men’s and women’s lacrosse and softball.
Carson-Newman University finished fourth. The Eagles brought home conference titles in women’s soccer and women’s basketball.
