From staff reports
Newsday reported Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) shattered a bat swung by All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes from the barrel to the knob with a sinking fastball in an intrasquad game at the New York Mets spring training complex in St. Lucie, Fla., last week.
Parnell is attempting to add a fourth pitch to his mid-90s fastball-slider-changeup arsenal. He’s working with pitching coach Dan Warthen and reliever J.J. Putz on reviving his split-fingered fastball, a pitch he hasn’t used since his college days at Charleston Southern.
Parnell either will make the Mets as a reliever or go to Triple-A Buffalo (the weather won’t be pleasant there in April) as a starter.
