Daughters of the American Revolution

SALISBURY — Four Rowan County students were honored by the Elizabeth Maxwell Steele Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Good Citizens.

The honors were presented at a luncheon at the Rowan County History Museum. Each student received an Elizabeth Maxwell Steele Scholarship as well as a national DAR Certificate of Recognition to be presented at their school awards day.

Chosen by their faculties, Dean Gilmore of North Hills Christian School, Carolina Elizabeth Hawkins of North Rowan High School, Mary Caroline Kaufman of Salisbury High School and Angelique Scialdone of East Rowan High School were awarded $100 scholarships.

Each student met high standards exhibiting the attributes of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

Carolina Hawkins is the daughter of Joseph Hawkins of Spencer. During her years at North Rowan High School, she earned honors as a JROTC cadet and assisted with the personnel and administration of the program during her service. Further, she has been active representing her military involvement in Veterans Day parades and is a member of the Color Guard Team. She has also served at blood drives and community cleanup efforts. Carolina plans to study theology or nursing.

The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James G. Kaufman, Mary Kaufman earned 18 academic excellence awards through her junior year and was the DAR essay winner for the Elizabeth Maxwell Steele Chapter, as well as district winner. She has participated in many school service organizations and was a swimmer, cross country runner and soccer team member.

In addition, she was involved in such extracurricular activities as Tar Heel Girls State, Rowan County Community Student Leaders, Student Leadership Team and the Davidson College McNab Program. As a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Mary has been involved in youth activities. In addition, she has been a community service advocate in such organizations and events as San Mateo, After School Math Tutors, Special Olympics, vacation bible school, Historic Salisbury, Kiwanis and Civitan events. She is ranked first in her graduating class.

In a ranking race at the top of the East Rowan High School graduating class, Angelique Scialdone, daughter of London Scialdone, has earned honors — including a 5.0 GPA — while maintaining a high level of social and service-oriented involvement. Her athletic career has included a four-year top-seeded participation in tennis, and she was selected All County Player three years. She earned the Most Improved, Most Valuable and Coaches awards.

Scialdone participated in special-interest clubs and served with Relay for Life and Young Life. She organized a service project collecting donations for Faithful Friends, participated in the Potato Project to assist with growing fresh foods for struggling families and school communities, raised money for Boys and Girls Home at Lake Waccamaw, and assisted with a tournament to raise money for less fortunate students at East Rowan during the holidays.

She also conducted the Flood Bucket Project to collect items for Hurricanes Matthew, Harvey and Irma. She also participated in Junior Civitan projects such as Homeless Awareness and the Women’s Shelter Project.

Dean Gilmore was selected by North Hills Christian School and honored by the DAR.
