College basketball roundup: Connecticut helps Calhoun get milestone

MILWAUKEE ó Jim Calhoun got his 800th career victory and senior guard A.J. Price scored a career-high 36 points as No. 2 Connecticut beat No. 8 Marquette 93-82 on Wednesday.
Calhoun became only the seventh coach in Division I history to win 800 or more games.
Stanley Robinson added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies (26-2, 14-2 Big East).
Jerel McNeal scored 26 points for the Golden Eagles (23-5, 12-3). They played most of the game without guard Dominic James, who broke a bone in his left foot in the first half. Coach Buzz Williams said James will have surgery and miss the rest of the season.
Price hit the clinching 3-pointer from the left wing with 1:10 remaining, then added two free throws to put Connecticut ahead 91-81 with 45.5 seconds left.

EAST LANSING, Mich. ó Freshman Delvon Roe scored 16 points and classmate Korie Lucious added 12.
The victory gives the Spartans (22-5, 12-3) a 11/2-game lead in the Big Ten race over No. 16 Purdue and a two-game lead over No. 20 Illinois.
Jake Kelly had 20 points for the Hawkeyes (14-14, 4-11).
No. 10 Villanova 74, DePaul 72
ROSEMONT, Ill. ó Scottie Reynolds and Dante Cunningham both scored 18 points as Villanova (23-5, 11-4 Big East) rallied for its ninth win in 10 games.
The Wildcats trailed by eight points early in the second half, then went on a 21-5 run to take a 52-44 lead. They were leading 60-48 with six minutes left, then had to hang on as DePaul’s Will Walker hit four 3-pointers in a 12-2 run that pulled the Blue Demons (8-20, 0-15) within 62-60 with 2:47 left.

COLUMBIA, Mo. ó DeMarre Carroll had 21 points and a career-best 14 rebounds as Missouri (24-4, 11-2 Big 12) improved to 17-0 at home.J.T. Tiller added 15 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Denis Clemente scored all but 11 of his 33 points in the second half for Kansas State (19-9, 7-6).

AUSTIN, Texas ó Damion James had 20 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth consecutive double-double.
A.J. Abrams scored 24 points for the Longhorns (19-8, 8-5 Big 12).
Nick Okorie scored 24 points to lead Texas Tech (12-16, 2-11). It played without head coach Pat Knight, who was suspended by the Big 12 for one game after criticizing the officiating in the Red Raiders’ previous loss.South Carolina 77, Kentucky 59
COLUMBIA, S.C. ó Devan Downey scored 21 points and South Carolina set a school record with 16 blocked shots.
South Carolina (20-6, 9-4 SEC) never trailed and led by at least 18 points the entire second half as it took sole possession of first place in the SEC East with three games left in the regular season.
The Gamecocks won the biggest game in Columbia since the team’s only SEC East title in 1997.
Downey showed his versatility with five steals and five assists. Dominique Archie added 12 points and four blocks. Sam Muldrow had eight points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks.
Patrick Patterson had 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead Kentucky (19-9, 8-5).

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ó Scotty Hopson scored a career-high 21 points to lead Tennessee (17-10, 8-5 SEC).

TOWSON, Md. ó Rocky Coleman scored 21 points, and former West Rowan standout Junior Hairston had 13 points and nine rebounds.
Delaware cut its deficit to 71-70 with 2:51 to go. Hairston responded with two baskets to give Towson (10-20, 5-12 CAA) a 75-70 advantage with 1:38 left.

GREENVILLE ó The Thundering Herd (13-15, 5-8 C-USA) jumped out to a 14-2 lead and a 39-28 halftime margin.
The closest ECU (13-14, 5-9) could get was eight points down at 40-32.
Chad Wynn led the Pirates with 16 points, Darrius Morrow had 15 and James Legan added 10. Sam Hinnant was held to six points.
