One of Rowan’s oldest races is on tap for Saturday, May 26, at Knox Middle School. Benefitting Relay for Life, the Bare Bones 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. on the USATF-certified course that finishes on the school track. A half-mile fun run follows at about 9:20 a.m.

Still priced at $20 early registration and $25 on race day, the Salisbury Rowan Runners began this race when a title sponsor backed out on the day before the initial race. Not wanting to inconvenience any runners who might not get the word of a cancellation, the race went on with a very low budget production. Since that time, SRR has kept the cost low for a quality event as a thank you to local area runners who support the many charitable races throughout the year.

All runners and walkers get a neon orange or yellow commemorative dri-fit shirt and plenty of post-race refreshments. SRR will collect used running shoes that will be delivered to Rowan Helping Ministries following the race. Awards will be given in five-year age groups and to the top three overall runners, both male and female.

Sponsors for the Bare Bones 5K include Novant Health, the City of Salisbury, the Salisbury Post, James River Equipment, Cheerwine and Knox Middle School. Online registration is at www.sportoften.com and a printable race brochure is at www.salisburyrowanrunners.org
