JC Price Post 107’s Annual Memorial Week Celebration begins Friday
The 2018 Annual Memorial Week Celebration to celebrate the 99th American Legion Anniversary is sponsored by J.C. Price Post 107.
• The event starts with a kick off on Friday May 25.
• 8 a.m. Saturday: flags will be placed on Veterans’ graves at the National Cemetery. Breakfast follows.
• 9 a.m. Monday: the Laying of Wreaths at the old cemetery followed by a memorial service at 10 a.m.
• 6:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, May 28-29: annual GospelFest at led by master of ceremonies Roland Carter and chairman Homer Robertson.
• 6 p.m. Monday: On the Midway: Food and merchandise vendors, arts & crafts, novelties, photo booths, games.
• 9 p.m.-2 a.m. Wednesday: Memorial Day Open House, downstairs.
• 9 p.m.-2 a.m. Thursday: Memorial Day Fling with Mystery DJ.
• Thursday through Saturday: Rides on the Midway by Recreational Equipment Inc. The purchase of a $10 wristband enters you in the raffle for a bicylce. Drawing Thursday, May 31.
• 9 p.m.-2 a.m. Saturday, June 2: Post Memorial Day Dance.

Fourth annual ‘Voices from the Margin’
“Voices from the Margin” returns to Lee Street Theatre for its fourth annual production. This year’s play, “AlieNation,” presents three American families living their daily lives in the context of current and developing immigration policies. Complications emerge as the families face their own connections and contradictions in relation to issues of immigration and justice.
Veteran actors Bob Paolino, Sara Lee and Seth Labowitz will be joined by Lisa Corpening and Justin Davis, as well as actors new to the stage, Justin Redd, Juila Lopez and Jonathan Ruiz. The Guerrilla Poets, founded by Rowan County resident Shane Manier, will perform original works created by Latinx youth. Director Linda Hunt, formerly of Livingstone College and associate of the National Black Theater Festival, showcases her talent as the first Black woman to direct on a commercial stage in Salisbury.
Collaborative support includes Lee Street Theatre, Salisbury Human Relations Council and Center for Faith & the Arts. The play was written by Susan Lee and is a project selected by the Rowan Arts Council to be funded by the NC Arts Council.
“AlieNation” will be performed May 30-31 at 7:30 p.m. at Lee Street Theatre, 329 N. Lee Str. Admission is by donation, $10 suggested, with proceeds supporting Covenant Community Connection, a subcommittee of the Salisbury Human Relations Council.

TODAY: North Rowan Bands Spring concert
SPENCER — The North Rowan High and Middle School Bands will be performing their Spring Concert this evening, May 24, at 6 p.m. in the high school’s auditorium. The performance will also feature selections by North Rowan’s Jazz Band. The concert is free, and all are invited to attend. North Rowan High School is located at 300 N. Whitehead Ave.

East Rowan Choral Department Spring Concerts
The EHRS Choral Department will hold two different spring concerts this year.
The first is on May 29 at 7 p.m. and includes Vocal Music 1, Vocal Music 2 and Honors Vocal Music. 140 students will come together for this concert.
The second is May 31 at 7 p.m. and will feature the Honors Vocal Group as well as the 2018 honors chorus graduates in solo performances. Both concerts will be directed by Dean Orbison, choral director and are free and open to the public.

High Cotton: The Kennedy Years
Saturday, 6-9 .m.
The annual High Cotton event features a male fashion show and silent auction to raise money for Family Crisis Council of Rowan Inc.
Hosted by Diana Dandro & Jason Keith, this fourth annual event will center around the fashion attire of the late President John Fitzgerald Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Group Gold Hill bike ride
GOLD HILL — The Gold Hill Historic Preservation Society will host the 19th Annual Group Gold Hill Bike Ride on Saturday with registration beginning at the E. H. Montgomery General Store at 7:30 a.m. Leave at 9 a.m.
This year’s ride combines the 25K, 50K and 100K rides with the 100K traveling to Silver Valley, an unincorporated community in eastern Davidson County. Sites along the ride include High Rock Lake and Emmons Silver Mine. The ride will travel across Lick Creek Road and continue through historic Denton. The full map and description will be available on the morning of the ride.

Rowan Rose Show will be held at the Salisbury Civic Center

The annual Rowan Rose Show will be held at the Salisbury Civic Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, May 26.
Previously the Rose Show has been open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. This year, the show will be open on Saturday afternoon only, so please plan to attend on Saturday from 1-5 p.m.
The show will feature hundreds of rose blooms including the large flowered hybrid teas that everyone loves, as well as new varieties, fragrant old roses and miniature roses.
A special display will contain award winners from each class, including Queen of the Show. This wide variety of roses offers an excellent opportunity to select favorites to grow in your own garden.
Society members will be present to advise on best practices for growing roses, membership in the Rowan Rose society, normally $20, will be available at half price.
In addition to displays of individual roses, a large section will be devoted to a variety of beautiful flower arrangements emphasizing the use of roses.
All area rose growers are welcome to enter roses between 6:30-10 a.m. on Saturday.

Kannapolis Memorial Day Ceremony Friday
KANNAPOLIS — To honor and pay tribute to those veterans who paid the ultimate price to protect and insure our freedom as Americans.
The Kannapolis Memorial Day Ceremony is May 28 at Veterans Park. The ceremony is preceded by a parade of Veterans down South Main Street and concludes as the marching units enter Veterans Park.
Any Veteran wishing to march or ride should be at the parking garage at 11:15 to form up to march or ride on the float. The parade will start at 11:30.
Miss North Carolina Victoria Huggins will ride in the parade and is the keynote speaker. Miss Cabarrus County Kylee Russel is also participating in the parade. JROTCs will will be marching from A.L. Brown H.S. Navy JROTC, Northwest Cabarrus and Central Cabarrus H.S. AirForce.
Congressman Richard Hudson is also participating and three Ride of Pride Trucks from Freightliner, escorted by the Patriot Guard, will conclude the parade.
The ceremony in the park starts at noon. The Ladies Auxilliary from Post 115 will be distributing poppies and donations will be accepted.
Free, open to the public. Bring chairs and small American Flags. After the ceremony is a reception for Miss North Carolina at the the Kannapolis Government Center.
