Overton Elementary
The Catholic Daughters of America honored Sacred Heart students last week during a 2018 Education Awards ceremony. These award are given at the local, state and national level. All the school’s first place at the state level will go onto to the National Competition.
Each year Catholic Daughters of the Americas sponsors a National Education Contest. Court Sacred Heart #1759 participates in this contest yearly. Students compete in their choice of categories including art, essay, poetry, computer art, music and photography in three divisions.
The local courts winning entries are submitted to the state level. Those winning entries are then submitted for the national contest. This year’s theme was Psalms 126, “The Lord has done great things for us, we are filled with joy,” and, “Finding joy in my life.”
The following student entries will be competing at the national level at the 57th Biennial National CDA Convention, Sioux Falls, SD, July 17-22:
Tony Frank, division I, computer art; Bree Whittington, division II, essay; Matt Frank, division III, photography; Barney Malloy, division III, poetry and division III, essay.

Division I, poetry: Delaney Fisher, first place, local.
Division I, essay: Malaysia Dillard, first place local, second place state; Isabella Restar, second place local and Katie Antosek, third place local.
Division I, art: Delaney Fisher, first place local, third place state and Emma Brown, second place local.
Division I, computer art: Tony Frank, first place local, first place state.
Division II, poetry: Sophia Malloy, first place local, second place state; Rachel McCullough second place local; John Llanio, third place local.
Division II, essay: Bree Whittington, first place local, first place state; Kyna Zaldivar, second place local and Hannah Carr, third place local.
Division II, art: Bree Whittington, first place local, second place state; Ellie Cardelle, second place local and Mary Grace Cardelle, third place local.
Division II, photography: Ellie Cardelle, first place local, second place state; Annie Tadiello, second place local and Sophia Malloy, third place local.

Brevard College

Gardener-Webb University
Gardner-Webb University recently honored undergraduate students for academic excellence and outstanding service and leadership. Winners of these awards exemplify the University’s core values of faith, service and leadership in their classrooms and communities.
Awards were presented to Leah Grace Jancic, of Cleveland, who received the Professor James Rash Award and Jake Kennedy, of Mount Ulla, who was recognized for his service as president of the Student Government Association. Kennedy also received the John and Linda Godbold Award, which is given to the student who best exemplifies faith, discipline and service.
In recognition of their awards, Jancic and Kennedy may choose one book for purchase by Gardner-Webb’s Dover Memorial Library. The books will be inscribed with their names and the date of the award presentation.
