Child grazed by shrapnel when pistol carried by Iredell deputy accidentally discharges at bowling alley

MOORESVILLE — A child was grazed by a piece of shrapnel when a pistol being carried by an off-duty Iredell County sheriff’s deputy discharged in a bowling alley Friday.
The deputy was bowling at the time, according to a statement from Sheriff Darren Campbell.
The incident occurred about 8 p.m. Friday at George Pappas’ Victory Lanes in Mooresville.
The child did not sustain a serious injury and was not taken to any medical facility for treatment, according to the statement.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal investigation of the incident. The Mooresville Police Department will conduct a parallel investigation to determine if any laws were broken.
The deputy involved has been placed on leave until both investigations are completed.
The name of the deputy was not released.
