Rowan weather: A hard rain’s going to fall

Rowan County is under a flash flood watch through 8 a.m. Wednesday due to the possibility of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Some storms may become severe with damaging downbursts and frequent lightning.
The remnants of Alberto will bring periods of heavy rainfall through Wednesday night. With the ground already saturated, trees may fall and creeks and rivers will rise. The heaviest rain will be in the mountains and foothills, as well as upstate South Carolina. While the rain will not be sustained for long periods, the brief heavy downpours could lead to significant rain totals.
Patchy fog is forming this morning, leading to cloudy skies and a high of 81. Showers and thunderstorms are likely all day, with a 70 percent chance of rain. Winds will be from the east southeast around 6 mph. A half to three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible.
Tonight, with the same 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, the low will be 70. Winds will be from the south southeast at 6 mph. Patchy fog will form after 2 a.m. A quarter to half inch of rain is possible.
Wednesday’s chance of rain will be 60 percent, starting with showers in the morning, then showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Fog will hang around until 7 a.m. It will be cloudy and 83, with south wind at 6-10 mph. Another quarter to half inch of rain is possible.
The chance of storms and showers goes down to 50 percent Wednesday night, with mostly cloudy skies and a low of 70. South wind will be at 5-7 mph. A tenth to quarter inch of rain is possible, with higher amounts in thunderstorms.
Thursday will be mostly cloudy and 86, with a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms and south southwest wind at 6-8 mph. The chance of rain drops to 30 percent Thursday night, with a low of 70.
Friday will have partly sunny skies and a high of 89, with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 a.m. The chance of rain goes down to 30 percent Friday night, with partly cloudy skies and a low of 69.
Saturday will have a 30 percent chance of showers after 11 a.m. It will be mostly sunny and hot, with a high of 88. Saturday night will be partly cloudy and 66.
Sunday will also have a 30 percent chance of showers, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 84. Then the chance of showers and thunderstorms goes up to 50 percent Sunday night, with mostly cloudy skies and a low of 65.
Monday will also have a 50 percent chance of showers and storms, with a high of 78 and mostly cloudy skies.
