Even though school will soon be out for the summer, it’s important that children continue to learn and grow during their time away from school.

This summer, Rowan County 4-H has planned 17 activities for our Summer Fun youth program. Any youth ages 5-19 (children must have completed kindergarten) are invited to participate. Many of these hands-on learning opportunities for youth focus on agriculture, while others focus on robotics, art, science and service.

Eight of the Summer Fun activities are already sold out and many are filling up quickly. Here are a few agriculture and food related activities that are still open:

1. Farm to Fork: June 20, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., ages 12-19, cost $5: Start the day at the Rowan County Cooperative Extension office and then travel to a local produce and beef farm for a tour. After visiting the farm, we will return to the Extension office to prepare lunch using fresh farm products.
2. Cloverbud Horse Camp: June 20, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., ages 5-8, cost $10: Meet at Rockwater Farm and work with the East Equine Explorers 4-H Club to learn all about horses. Instruction will focus on horse colors, behavior, anatomy, safety and more.
3. South of the Border: July 11, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., cost $5: Join us at the Rowan County Cooperative Extension office to learn about Mexican culture. We will make a Mexican inspired pizza and “fried” ice cream as part of our learning experience.

To register for these activities, you must turn in a completed enrollment form and payment (cash or check) at the Rowan County Cooperative Extension Office prior to the event; first come, first served. You can find the forms at the Extension office or https://rowan.ces.ncsu.edu/.
