Area Sports Briefs: Catawba women win

Dana Hicks scored 29 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Catawba’s women’s basketball team to an 89-83 SAC victory over Lincoln Memorial at Goodman Gym on Wednesday.
Catawba (15-9, 7-6) led 43-38 at halftime but trailed 59-58 with 11:52 remaining. Brittany Higgins hit a go-ahead bucket for Catawba with 5:20 left on the clock.
Jolyssa Connor scored a career-high 13 points for the Indians. Brooke Whitley added 12 points. Cameron Clark had nine assists.

– Blue Bears honored
Livingstone guard Tayloe Taylor was named to the All-CIAA men’s basketball team.
Elizabeth City State’s Anthony Hilliard was named CIAA Player of the Year. J.C. Smith’s James Dillard was named CIAA Defensive Player of the Year.
Livingstone’s Montiya Harrison and Greg Henry were named to the CIAA All-Rookie teams. Harrison has averaged 9.9 points a game for the women’s team.
CIAA Women’s Player of the Year was Tatiana Ellis of St. Paul’s.
CIAA Defensive Player of the Year was Bowie State’s Denisha Kenion.
– College tennis
Catawba’s men’s team downed Alberta 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon to improve to 6-2.
– College golf
Catawba finished 12th out of 14 teams at the Newberry Invitational women’s golf tournament.
Catawba’s Kelsy Babos led the Indians. She finished fourth with rounds of 80 and 78.
– Prep baseball
South Rowan junior shortstop Maverick Miles gave a verbal commitment to High Point on Wednesday. Already a two-time all-county player, Miles batted .407 for the Raiders as a sophomore.

– Prep boys basketball
A.L. Brown beat Anson County 58-52 in the first round of the SPC tournament on Tuesday.
Demarcus “Smoke” Phifer scored 17 points for the Wonders and hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer late in the game. Vance Chapman scored a season-high 11 points, while Jacob Newman had 10.
Third-seeded Brown (14-7) plays second-seeded Marvin Ridge (18-5) in a semifinal at Sun Valley tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Marvin Ridge won the first regular-season meeting 85-82 before Brown’s football players were in action. Brown won the rematch 81-70.
No. 1 seed Concord plays No. 4 Sun Valley in the other semifinal.
Brown has won 10 of its last 12 games, with both losses in that stretch to second-ranked Concord. The Wonders have played their last seven games without double-figure scorer Jacques Deese, but he may return for the state playoffs.
Unless Brown wins the tournament and moves up to the No. 2 seed, it will play on the road against the NPC’s No. 2 seed in the first round of the state playoffs on Monday.
– Prep golf
Brett Leslie made his first hole-in-one on Tuesday while qualifying for the East Rowan golf team at McCanless Golf Club.
Leslie was playing with Devin Smith, Jarred DeVlieger and Hunter Bell when he aced the 165-yard No. 3 hole with a 6-iron from the blue tee.
– Prep football
Carson all-county linebacker John Mullis, one of the state’s leading tacklers, will play at Division III Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.

* Northwest Cabarrus’ Gavin Billings was one of 15 football signees announced by Elon.
Billings, 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, was a captain and excelled as both a tight end and defensive end.
He was recruited by Elon as a tight end.
Billings, who also plays basketball for the Trojans, led the Trojans in sacks as a junior.
The NHS member plans to major in exercise science and nutrition.
– Gross honored
Cannon School’s Krista Gross, a UNC recruit, was one of 20 girls named to play in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association High School All-America Game.
– 7th-grade hoops
West Rowan’s boys beat Knox 58-45. Devin Parks had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs (5-0). Daisean Reddick scored 13 points, while Najee Tucker had 11.
Jaquez Finger scored 15 points for the Trojans. Johnny Canipe had 10.
* West’s boys beat North Rowan 61-45 in a battle of unbeaten teams.
Parks had 23 points and 21 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Reddick scored 16 points, while Tucker had 11.
Mike Connor scored 17 for the Mavericks (4-1). Michael Bowman had 11 points, and Mike Bost scored nine.
* West’s girls defeated North Rowan 38-20. Michaela White had 22 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for the Bulldogs (2-4). Mary Noble had six points and five rebounds. Madison Muire and Katie Crider played well on defense.
* Southeast’s boys shelled China Grove 70-15. Seth Martin scored 12 points for the Patriots. Darius Gabriel had nine points, while Patrick Ratliff, Tre Williams and John Patella had seven apiece. Rob Littlejohn and Cody Dale added six each. Jamond Phillips had five.
– DCDS hoops
Davidson Country Day’s middle school boys lost to Clemmons Redeemer 50-40.
Celexus Long hit three 3-pointers and scored 15 points for the Diamondbacks (16-14). Conor Honyecutt scored 10.

* Davidson Country Day will be the host for the Bank of North Carolina Championships, with 20 area middle schools competing in junior varsity and varsity boys and girls competition.

The North Hills elementary school boys topped Christian Family 37-14 in a first-round tournament game. Grayson Whicker scored six points.
* North Hills Middle’s boys topped Covenant Classical 35-34 in OT.
Matt Ward scored 17 points, including game-deciding free throws. Zack Sukkasem scored six points.
– Miller in ODP
Salisbury freshman Connor Miller will travel to Williamsburg, Va., this weekend to participate in an Olympic Development Program sub-region event.
Miller is a goalkeeper on the N.C. 94 ODP team and will compete against teams from Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland.
– Rowan Y volleyball
Rowan County YMCA is accepting registrations for a middle school girls volleyball league through March 7.
Games will be played at YMCAs in the county.
Girls should sign up at Hurley YMCA if they attend Salisbury, North or West, at South YMCA if they attend South or Carson, and East YMCA if they attend East.
Fees are $36 for members and $60 for potential members.
