CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ó Sylven Landesberg had been saying it for days. All Virginia needed to do was break its losing streak, and the Cavaliers (9-13, 3-8) would turn things around.
On Wednesday night, he helped prove himself right, contributing 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists as Virginia won its second game in a row, 75-61, against Virginia Tech.
“They definitely were the perfect opponent to play against,” Landesberg said of the Cavaliers’ top rivals. “We knew the fans were going to be here for it. It was definitely a great game to have right after the Clemson game. That Clemson win really got us going.”
The Cavaliers beat the No. 13 Tigers in overtime in their last game, ending an eight-game slide, and ended a three-game skid against the Hokies, whose loss may prove costly.
It was their fourth loss in six games and left the struggling Hokies (16-9, 6-5 ACC) facing an ACC gauntlet in the last five games of the regular season.
They play No. 3 North Carolina, No. 9 Duke, No. 13 Clemson once each and Florida State twice, likely needing to win at least three to warrant NCAA at-large berth consideration.
“Depends on what happens in the next five games,” Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg said.
Florida State 80, Miami 67
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ó Toney Douglas scored 24 points and Uche Echefu added 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Florida State to an 80-67 victory over Miami on Wednesday night.
The Seminoles (20-6, 7-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) made 31 of 35 free throws and put the clamps on Miami scoring machine Jack McClinton for most of the game, limiting him to 13 points. McClinton, who had scored 101 points in the last three games, had just five at halftime and went nearly 251/2 minutes without scoring through the middle of the game.
James Dews led Miami (15-10, 4-8) with a season-high 19 points.
