CHAPEL HILL ó Shelby forward Eric Mayo has had a disappointing run through the playoffs, mainly riding the bench because of foul problems.
But Mayo came through when it counted, scoring 15 points as the Golden Lions held off a late rally to beat Northwood 62-50 to win the Class 2-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association boys championship on Saturday.
Mayo, who was named the championship game’s most valuable player, also had team highs in rebounds (nine), assists (four) and blocked shots (two) as the Golden Lions led by as many as 13 in the second half.
“We figured he was due a game, because he hasn’t played very well since the second round of the sectionals,” said Shelby coach Aubrey Hollifield, a former coach at A.L. Brown. “I don’t know if he’s tried to do too much … but this is the first game we’ve been able to keep him in the game the entire time.”
Nick Stamp added 14 points and Derrick Mayo 10 for Shelby (29-2), which won its first 2-A state title.
4A BOYS
CHAPEL HILL ó C.J. Harris scored 20 points and Mount Tabor held off repeated rallies by Fayetteville Terry Sanford to win 60-55.
Josh Hicks added 14 points and Alex Fagg had 10 rebounds and nine points for the Spartans (31-1), who nearly blew a 17-point lead after the first quarter to win their 27th consecutive game.
Chris Wilson scored 16 points and Mike Mason had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs (28-4), who pulled within three points with 33 seconds remaining
4A GIRLS
CHAPEL HILL ó Christal Caldwell scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as West Charlotte pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Durham Hillside 78-60.
Nikki Burton added 16 points, Ebony Caldwell 14, Jessica Freeman 13 and Trena Moore-Smith 12 for the Lions (28-3).
3A BOYS
RALEIGH ó Chris McCain scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help Northern Guilford defeat Gastonia Forestview 66-54.
McCain was 10-for-12 from the field and made all five of his free throws en route to game MVP honors and Northern Guilford’s (30-3) first title in its second year of existence.
Jonathan Frye added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Nighthawks, which ended the season on a 21-game winning streak. Michael Neal also scored 12 points for Northern Guilford.
Preston Holmes scored 19 points to lead Forestview (25-7), which trailed 30-23 at halftime in its first state final. Jack Sumner added 12 points for the Jaguars, and Chris Johnson scored 10 points.
3A GIRLS
RALEIGH ó Helen Terry made a go-ahead free throw with 1:27 remaining and Greensboro Dudley held on for a 60-58 victory over Gastonia Forestview.
Breonna Patterson scored 23 points to lead the Panthers (30-3). Terry, the game’s MVP, added 16 points to help Dudley finish the season with a 23-game winning streak and its first state championship.
Forestview finished 26-5.
1A BOYS
RALEIGH ó Aaron Toomey scored 35 points to help Kernersville McGuiness defeat Weldon 72-56.
Toomey made a championship-game record 19 free throws (in 21 attempts) to earn MVP honors for the Villains (31-2), who won a championship in its first appearance in the state final.
Cameron Staten scored 11 points to lead the Chargers (26-2).
1A GIRLS
RALEIGH ó Megan Buckland scored 15 points to lead Kernersville McGuinness to a 64-33 victory over East Bladen.
Buckland won MVP honors to help the Villains (29-4) claim their fourth consecutive state title. Brittany Cox scored 11 points for McGuinness, which never trailed.
Courtney Melvin scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead East Bladen (26-3), which lost to McGuinness in the state final for the second time in the last three years.
