Area Sports Briefs: Brooks named to Southern League all-star roster

SEVIERVILLE —  The Southern League  announced that Craig Brooks (Catawba) of the Tennessee Smokies has been added to the roster for the  Southern League All-Star Game.

The game will be played on Tuesday, June 19, at Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Trevor Clifton was previously named to the All-Star team but is unable to participate due to being promoted to AAA Iowa.

Brooks has been pitching well for the Smokies.

Brooks has posted a 2-1 record with a 3.16 ERA.

The 25-year-old has appeared in 19 games while tossing 25.2 innings. Brooks has been able to hold opposing hitters to a .160 batting average and has also picked up three saves on the season.

Craig Brooks was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the seventh round in the 2015 MLB draft.

Colton Laws (Carson, Charlotte 49ers) has pitched 10 scoreless innings in his  last two starts for the Lansing Lugnuts of the Class A Midwest League.

The 22-year-old  Laws (3-2) has struck out 31 in 37 innings while walking only three.

Laws was a seventh-round pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2017 draft.

Former Catawba catcher Zac Almond has been assigned to the Missoula Ospreys of the short-season Pioneer League.

Almond was a 35th-round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2017.
