Area briefs: Lyerly, Britt hot in split

Catawba’s baseball team split a doubleheader at Mars Hill Tuesday, winning 16-4 and losing 6-3.
The Indians (11-8, 5-2) sent 16 batters to the plate in a 10-run fifth inning in the opener. Craige Lyerly (East Rowan) hit a grand slam to key the big frame. Lyerly and Chris Ahearn had two hits each in the fifth.
Lyerly knocked in six runs in the game. Kevin McMillan (North Rowan), Brian Hatley (West Rowan) and Zeb Link (West) finished with three hits apiece.
Hatley and Josh Hohn also homered for Catawba.
Blake Ketner (NW Cabarrus) improved to 5-0 with five solid innings.
* The Lions (13-15, 2-6) hit three homers in the first inning of the nightcap to take charge.
Mars Hill freshman Alex Britt (Salisbury) was the winning pitcher. He pitched into the sixth inning and allowed five hits. He walked one and fanned one. Britt shut out the Indians until Ryan Query (A.L. Brown) hit a three-run homer in the sixth. Ahearn, Query and Link had two hits apiece.
– Abel in all-star game
Salisbury senior Brandon Abel, a 6-foot-5 post player, was named to play in the 18th Charlotte All-Star Classic that will be played at Providence Day on Saturday, March 28, at 3 p.m.
Abel helped the Hornets win 28 straight games, the CCC regular-season and tournament titles and the Sam Moir Christmas Classic. He had prolific scoring games of 29 and 31 points and averaged 13.6 points a game despite bouts with knee injuries.
Abel, the No. 8 scorer in school history with 1,182 points, recently was named to the All-CCC team and will be a member of the All-Rowan County squad for the second time.
– College baseball
Freshman Micah Jarrett (East Rowan) was 1-for-4 for Wake Forest in a 3-1 victory against Appalachian State Tuesday.
ASU’s Nick Daniels (NW Cabarrus) allowed only one run in 22/3 innings but took the loss when he surrendered a tiebreaking run in the sixth.
* UNC Pembroke freshman Matt Ingold (South Rowan) was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and scored four runs in a 15-6 victory against Wingate.
* Caleb Shore (South) was 2-for-4 for Belmont Abbey in a 4-2 win against Carson-Newman.
* Jonathan McDaniel (Davie) pitched three scoreless innings in Pfeiffer’s 8-3 win against Newberry.
* Trey Holmes (East) is batting .426 with three homers and 19 RBIs in 47 at-bats for 13-0 Pitt Community College.
* Wilkes Community College swept Surry CC recently to climb to 15-3.
Cy Young (East) improved to 5-0 by holding Surry to two runs in four innings and striking out six in a 12-9 victory. Jason Brown (A.L. Brown) had two hits. Justin Kidd (West Rowan) had two RBIs.
In a 12-0 romp over Surry, Jacob Dobbins (North Rowan) and Jason Ridenhour (North) drove in two runs apiece. Daniel Welch (NW Cabarrus) went 2-for-3.
– Prep soccer
West Rowan cruised past West Iredell 7-0 Tuesday for its first NPC victory.
Sophomore Brittany Gibbons and freshman Rachel Brown scored two goals each for the Falcons (1-2).
Also scoring goals were Allison Parker, Allison Baucom and Jessica Gibbons on an assist from her sister Brittany.
Brittany Gibbons had three assists. Baucom and Nicole Oucente had one helper each.
– Prep baseball
League games involving North Rowan, Salisbury and Carson were postponed by wet grounds on Tuesday and will be made up today.
The East Rowan-West Rowan NPC matchup in Mount Ulla was moved back to tonight at 7 p.m.
– Prep softball
Carson lost to NPC foe North Iredell 1-0 Tuesday in Olin when the Raiders scored in the seventh inning. Kasey Talley drove in the winning run.
Karley Harkey struck out nine and held the Cougars to three hits.
– Prep tennis
Salisbury lost 5-4 to Lexington in a matchup of teams expected to contend for second place in the CCC. The Hornets face Ledford, the league favorite, today.
Lexington took a 4-2 lead into doubles in part because it claimed third-set tiebreakers at two spots. It’s third-seeded doubles tandem clinched the victory.
Salisbury (4-1, 2-1) won third-set tiebreakers at the other two doubles positions. Austin Flynn-Alan Lebowitz prevailed 2-6, 6-3, (10-7) over Justin Miller-Charlie Jordan at No. 1. Steven Page-Alex Weant won 6-2, 3-6, (10-5) over Charles Chisholm-Alan Heiss.
In singles, Salisbury got wins from Flynn and Lebowitz.
* West Rowan is strictly a road team with construction ongoing at West, but it’s 4-0. The Falcons rolled over High Point Andrews 9-0 Tuesday with lots of 6-0 games.

– Catawba softball
Catawba split a doubleheader with visiting Fairmont Tuesday.
The visitors from West Virginia scored a run in the fourth on a hit by Chelsea Sheets and won the opener 1-0. The Indians took the nightcap 8-0.
Chelsea Wallace pitched a one hitter for Catawba (12-10) in the nightcap. Jessie Whitesides had a two-run homer. Cassie Markham had three hits, including a two-run single.
– Regional men’s hoops
Top-seeded Augusta State crushed USC Aiken 85-57 Tuesday to win the D-II Southeast Regional and advance to the Elite Eight in Springfield, Mass.
Garret Siler, a 7-footer, and Ben Madgen scored 25 points apiece for Augusta State (29-4), which made its first seven field-goal tries and finished at 61 percent from the field.
Josh Dollard scored 16 points for the Pacers.
– College lacrosse
Pfeiffer University’s Kevin Anderson has been selected as Conference Carolinas men’s player of the week.
– Pfeiffer camps
Battle of the Border Basketball Camps information is now available via the Pfeiffer athletics Web site.
The Battle of the Border camps are team camps that guarantee a minimum of 11 games.
A middle school team camp will take place June 15-17. Boys middle school, junior varsity and varsity team camps will be held June 18-20 and June 25-27.
Girls junior varsity and varsity team camps will be held June 22-24.

Wingate’s women overcame an early deficit and beat Catawba 6-3 Tuesday at Johnson Tennis Center.
Steffi Cook won in singles and doubles for Catawba (6-5, 0-1 SAC)
* Wingate’s men rolled over Catawba 8-1 Tuesday. The only winner for the Indians (7-3, 0-1 SAC) was the doubles pairing of Matt King-Tom McCormick.
– Overseas basketball
Terris Sifford (West Rowan) had 34 points and 14 rebounds to lead his team in Italy to a win on Saturday. Sifford is one of the top two scorers in the league, along with his former Charlotte Royals AAU teammate Timon Farley, who played at Charleston Southern and Queens.
Sifford goes head-to-head with Farley this Saturday.
– 7th-grade hoops
The Rowan County Middle School Conference tournament starts Saturday at Corriher-Lipe.

East Rowan YMCA is registering youngsters for Mighty Kickers soccer, spring soccer and flag football through March 21.
Mighty Kickers is an introduction to soccer for ages 3-4. Spring soccer leagues are for ages 5-14 and teach fundamentals as well as YMCA principles and sportsmanship.
The no-contact flag football leagues are for ages 5-14 and teach basic skills.
