Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) shot 1-under 71 in the third round of the NC Amateur on Saturday in Wallace.

Lyerly birded the par-3 No. 3 hole  at River Landing for the third day in a row.

He’s tied for fourth at 211, seven shots off the pace.

Lyerly won the tournament two years ago.

Michael Childress (Cannon School, Richmond) also had a solid round on Saturday. Childress shot 71 and is tied for 42nd at 220.

Childress also will be competing in the upcoming NC Junior Boys Championship at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte.

Legion baseball

Rohan Handa, a big lefty from Cannon School who is headed to Yale, was in charge again for the Kannapolis American Legion team on Saturday.

Kannapolis won, 7-1, against Stanly in a divisional game.  Handa pitched into the seventh. Surry Community College’s  Jacob Tuttle got the final out.

Seth Morgan from Northside Christian hit a three-run homer and Northwest Cabarrus’ Devin Faggart had two hits.

Kannapolis lost to Area IV’s Caldwell County on Friday, 6-4.

Jordan Cassell had four hits and three RBIs as Eastern Randolph beat High Point, 13-3, in a Northern Division game on Saturday.

Junior Legion

Carson lost to Concord Post 51, 3-0, on Saturday.

It was Carson’s first loss.

Carson (12-1, 2-1) plays  Kannapolis Post 115 at NW Cabarrus on Monday.

Emory Taylor,Tyler Thompson, Jake Harris, Blane Roberts,Caden Hudson and Aaron Misenheimer had hits for Carson.

Misenheimer had a double and Harris had a triple.

Mason Heard took the loss. Deacon Wike and Misenheimer also pitched.

West Rowan beat Kannapolis, 13-10, on Friday.

West is home against Kannapolis on Monday and hosts Carson on Tuesday.

Young hoops star

Athan Gill, 13, a rising 8th-grader at West Rowan Middle School, was recently invited to play with Asheville Game Changer AAU team at a regional tournament in Greenville, S.C.

Gill, who plays locally for Team F.L.Y., coached by Dadrian Cuthbertson, will also join Game Changer at a tournament in Tennessee next week.

While in Greenville, Gill received an invitation to attend a national camp in San Diego, Calif.

Sand volleyball

Tori Hester (West Rowan) and her partner Madie Lichty have qualified for the Volley America  Junior Nationals in Atlantic City on July 25-28.

Track and field

Jenna Robinson, the Yadkin Valley Conference Field Athlete of the Year for Gray Stone was 38th in the  freshman triple jump at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals.

College baseball

Former East Rowan and Rowan County American Legion star Chandler Blackwelder is transferring to Pitt Community College.

Blackwelder redshirted at UNC Pembroke this year.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS—  Jose Devers had three hits and scored two runs, and Ryan Lillie allowed just five hits over six innings as the Greensboro Grasshoppers defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 4-1 on Saturday.

Vincenzo Aiello got Carlos Perez to fly out with runners on first and third to end the game for his third save of the season.

Lillie (6-1) picked up the win after he struck out seven while allowing one run.

Kannapolis tied the game 1-1 in the first after Luis Robert scored on a stolen base.

The Grasshoppers took the lead in the fifth inning when Devers scored on an error.

  

SR baseball camp

It’s not too late to enroll in this summer’s South Rowan  Raider baseball camp.

The four-day camp for rising 1st-8th graders runs June 18-21 and costs $80.

Instructors are South coaches and players.
