Hungry Howie’s opens
KANNAPOLIS – Hungry Howie’s Pizza, originator of the Flavored Crust pizza, opened its first Kannapolis location on June 20.
To celebrate, Hungry Howie’s donated a portion of proceeds on June 20 to Kannapolis YMCA and on June 21 to Cabarrus Partnership for Children.
Kannapolis franchisee Lance DeGroot began his career in logistics and program development before switching into franchising. After trying Hungry Howie’s for the first time after moving to North Carolina six years ago, he knew this was this business for him and his family. DeGroot plans to open three Hungry Howie’s across Cabarrus County over the next three years.
“Everything in my life has lead me to becoming a franchisee, and picking Hungry Howie’s was a no-brainer because it’s such a fast-growing brand and I absolutely love the product,” DeGroot said.
“One of my favorite things about Hungry Howie’s is that the dough is made fresh every single day, which I believe makes a huge difference in the taste. I’m excited to share that with the Kannapolis community, and continue to expand the brand’s footprint in North Carolina.”

The Kannapolis opening marks the 12th Hungry Howie’s location in the metro Charlotte area, and the first for DeGroot.
In addition, long-time franchisee Eric Fairbanks opened his 14th North Carolina store in Belmont on June 20.

Mobile mammogram unit
On June 15, the Novant Health Mobile Mammogram Unit was stationed in the parking lot of Moose Pharmacy on West Innes Street.
Dr. Hetal Amin-Patel, of Beautiful Dentistry, coordinated the event, which was co-hosted by Piedmont Family Medicine and Moose Pharmacy. The idea came to Patel soon after the wife of Dr. David Mayberry, also a dentist with the practice, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Patel said of the event, “I was very happy we were able to coordinate this with Novant Health. It is a great way to help the community and show support for all those struggling with breast cancer.”
Anyone who wishes to have their mammogram at the mobile site must be at least 40 years old and not have had a mammogram in the past year. The mobile unit is not recommended for those patients who are breastfeeding, pregnant or have a history of breast cancer (within the last two years).
Novant staff will file the patient’s mammogram with the insurance provider. If a patient does not have insurance, grants are available to those who may need financial assistance.

Janet Ward Black earns award
Greensboro attorney Janet Ward Black has been selected by the North Carolina Advocates for Justice (NCAJ) as a recipient of the 2018 Ebbie Award.
This award was named after Ebbie Bailey, the First Lady emeritus of NCAJ, who helped founding member Allen Bailey establish the North Carolina Advocates for Justice more than 50 years ago. The Ebbie Award was created in 2003 in Ebbie Bailey’s honor to “recognize service and inspired commitment to NCAJ and its mission.” Black helped establish the Ebbie Award during her tenure as NCAJ president. The NCAJ is a 3,000-lawyer organization dedicated to protecting people’s rights.
Black has now been chosen as a recipient of this year’s Ebbie Award for her service on the executive committee as past president appointed by the president and for her work inside and outside the courtroom.
She is being honored as a “selfless public servant and fierce advocate for justice for those who have been injured by the wrongdoing of others.” Black was presented the 2018 Ebbie Award on June 18 during the Board of Governors meeting at the NCAJ Annual Convention in Wilmington.
“It is an incredible honor to come full circle and be selected as a recipient of the Ebbie Award,” says Black. “I consider it a privilege to continue to serve the NCAJ alongside my peers.”
